Stable-master
Description
- The Stable-master is a class of Non-player Character. Stable-masters are found in all major settlements and in many other locations as well. Players can travel between locations by renting a mount -- a horse or pony or, in Moria, a goat.
- Renting a mount from a Stable-master is the fastest and one of the simplest ways to travel across Middle-Earth. To be able to take a mount to a location, you must already have talked with the Stable-master at the destination location to activate that location for future travel. Not activated Stable-masters have glowing blue icons. (Note that this activation requirement also applies to the various Writs of Special Passage available in the Lotro Store.
- Prior to Update 10, all travel routes beyond those in the starter areas required that you first visit the destination before you could travel there on a stable mount.
- Using a rented mount, you may only travel to other Stable-masters you have already spoken to (aside from some starter area locations) and along predefined routes. You may dismount a rented mount at any point in the travel. (You need not worry about them, they are well trained and will find their way on to their original destination on their own.) Some travel routes require a certain level, Reputation or quests to use. Long-distance routes are usually available as Swift Travel. Achieving "Friend" status with various factions will grant you a 10 per-cent discount on travel costs at related Stable-masters.
- Many Stable-masters are named. However, many, especially in the newer expansions are simply identified generically as "stable-master."
Swift Travel
- Swift Travel is a feature for some routes that significantly reduces travel time.
- For example, travelling from Thorin's Gate to Bree with the normal travel would take a long time, but Swift Travel reduces that to approximately 15 seconds.
- Prices range from 1 silver for Swift Travel between starter areas to 30 to 75 silver elsewhere.
- It is also the only way to reach the Ettenmoors if you don't have the map there yet.
- There are level and or Deed or Quest based restrictions on some routes.
- Characters who are Free-to-Play, and Premium characters who have never been played during VIP, may access Swift Travel by buying Writs for Special Passage at the LOTRO Store. Swift routes between starter areas are available for anybody.
Locations
- Hotfix 18.2.1 introduced the "Stable-Master collections window." See: Collections#Stable-masters
- Stable-masters Collection: The Stable-masters collection displays all Stable-masters you have discovered, and helps you find those you have yet to discover! Each Stable-master location provides travel options, available destinations, and a link to the game map. The Stable-master Collection makes getting around Lord of the Rings Online even easier!
- See: map of all Stable-masters and travel routes - (annotated in German).
- For an in-game Travel reference use the "Travel Locations Reference Lua" by Vinny"
- "This plugin provides details on all the travel locations in the game except for some boats. For each location you can list all the destinations with costs and travel restrictions. It can also find the best route between any two stable locations and factor in Milestone/Return/Guide/Muster skills, even providing a clickable icon for the skill when it provides the best route."
- For a convenient way to manage your Milestones and Travel skills use: Travel Window Lua by D.H1icks.
- This plugin creates a single window that contains all the available travel skills, including the race, class and reputation skills.
- For details on how to use Plugins see: Plugins

General information
Costs
- The rates shown here are non-discounted rates.
- There are a number of different discounts available to characters.
- These discounts will appear in one's Skills - Passive Traits under Discounts. Travel discounts are indicated by a Horse Head icon, and are usually related to reputation with a particular Faction. These are normally a 10% discount and tied to specific Stable-masters (typically related to a specific Faction). There is also a "Travel Discount," which was available to Founders through the 2nd year of LOTRO, which is a 20% discount and is additive with Faction discounts.
Swift Travel
- Swift travel is available to VIPs for free; characters played at least once while VIP also have access to Swift Travel, see VIP. The swift routes in the beginning areas are free to all players. Swift travel can be temporarily unlocked (1 hour, 1 day, 7 days, 30 days) with the Writ of Special Passage from the LOTRO Store.
Travel-Hubs
- While all stable-masters are "regional", several stable-masters are "global travel-hubs." That is to say, they are key locations which allow you to move from one area to another in Middle-earth with a minimum number of "hops."
- South Bree in Bree-land is the most connected hub. It provides routes to stable-masters in Dunland, Enedwaith, the Great River, East Rohan, West Rohan, Dol Amroth, Dale, Lake-town, Magh Ashtu, Járnfast, and Skarháld
- Rivendell in the Trollshaws provides access to Eregion
- The Twenty-first Hall in Moria provides access to all of Moria, Inner Caras Galadhon and Stangard in The Great River.
- Inner Caras Galadhon in Lothlórien provides access to Galtrev in Dunland, Lhanuch in Enedwaith, Stangard in The Great River, Snowbourn in East Rohan, and Rivendell in the Trollshaws
- Snowbourn in the Sutcrofts in East Rohan provides access to South Bree, Moria, Inner Caras Galadhon , Stangard in The Great River, and Forlaw in Wildermore.
- Dol Amroth in Western Gondor provides access to South Bree, the Twenty-first Hall in Moria, Aldburg in Western Rohan, and all locations in Western Gondor, Central Gondor, and Eastern Gondor.
- Osgiliath (After Battle) in March of the King provides access to South Bree, Moria, Dol Amroth, Aldburg, Minas Tirith (Before the battle), Galtrev, all locations in North Ithilien and all locations in Anórien (After Battle).
