Missions
Overview
Missions are small instances available to players level 20 and above. Missions scale to the level of the character which launches them, and can be completed Solo or Duo. Rather than using Instance Finder, launching a mission involves accepting a quest from a specific mission quest-giver NPC, which usually appears statically in the various mission hubs (exception: for the Further Adventures of Elladan and Elrohir Missions, the quest-givers appear in various places in Middle Earth, as the story progresses).
Each mission has a unique objective and some have a Twist, a special condition present in the Mission. Several Mission sets have had Delvings enabled, providing the option for level-capped players to increase the difficulty of their Missions for greater rewards.
Most missions are repeatable; the ones which are not are "gated" missions which are necessary to complete in order to unlock the repeatable ones in the same cluster. In addition, some clusters have quest prerequisites before the repeatable missions are unlocked, and for the Gundabad Missions you must first join the Zhelruka Allegiance before any of the other mission content becomes available.
Hub Accessibility
Some of the mission hubs are connected together in a Swift Travel mesh accessible via Mission Recruiter stable-masters. This form of Swift Travel is unlocked, even for Free to Play players. All of the endpoints are auto-discovered.
All non-seasonal mission clusters, other than the two "Further Adventures" ones, have barterable ports to their mission hubs, although in some cases these are subject to Reputation prerequisites, and some are only available through the Delving barter system.
Quick Reference Table
There are 8 "always available" mission clusters, and one "seasonal" mission cluster, available only during the yearly The Tale of the Shipwrecked Mariners event.
Miscellaneous Info
Duo Missions
Missions can be played by two players in a fellowship, even if they aren't the same level. The procedure:[1]
- When Player A starts the Mission, Player B will see a dialog. Click "OK".
- Player B should then talk to the NPC who granted the Mission.
- Player B should select the same Mission quest, as if to start the solo version. (This step is required for Player B to receive credit for the mission in wrapper quests.)
- Player B should scroll to the bottom of the quest list to "Available Private Encounters", and find the Mission there.
Twists
Missions each have a different Twist; special effects or conditions that you must overcome to complete the Mission:

Before the Shadow Missions
- Requires purchasing the Before the Shadow expansion.
- These missions feature the Delving system, for characters at the Level Cap of their server, whether that be a Legendary Server or a "regular"/"live" server. Delving is a tiered difficulty system, with a rotating set of "malices" which apply to the mobs in the missions, and a unique set of endgame-focused rewards. See Delving System for more details.
- Unlike other Missions, there is not a single hub. The 40 missions appear unevenly at 3 hubs spread throughout Swanfleet and Cardolan, and also on a daily rotation, so that a subset of missions show up at each hub, on any given day. Each hub has a quest-giver & barterer for the missions themselves, and nearby, a barter NPC for Delvings.
- Although they still display a Twist indicator, all of the Before the Shadow missions released thus far have Twist: None as their designator.
Repeatable Missions
The following repeatable Missions can be completed once free, on each of their respective days, and they can be reset and run more often for 5 Mithril Coin
Umbar Missions
- Requires the purchase of the Umbar Expansion.
- While characters level 20 or above are eligible to run Umbar missions, the only options at release, for lower-level characters to access The Bloody Eagle Tavern, where the mission NPCs are located, are either:
- via use of the The Allure of Umbar Baharbêl housing-teleporter item, which is a bonus for the Ultimate Edition of the expansion, or
- via multiple uses of Mithril Coin to travel there via stable-masters and/or dock-masters (e.g. South Bree to Lond Cirion to Umbar Baharbêl).
- Beware, however, that low-level characters travelling in high-level areas are subject to hazards, see Level restrictions.
