As you journey through Middle-earth, your character will have the opportunity to become a hero of Middle-earth as you aid both the Fellowship and the Free Peoples with what is called the "Epic" quest line. This story is interwoven with J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy, both working alongside it - in a story created specifically for The Lord of the Rings Online - and crossing-over into it at important or interesting moments.

At certain points in the story, there are so-called 'on-ramp' opportunities. These are questchains that do not require completion of previous epic quests, thus offering a way to customize your story experience. These 'on-ramp' opportunities are marked by the symbol: .

The story is at some points interrupted by short Interludes that usually showcase events taking place at a different time or place.

Lore

The overall plan for the Epic Story in LOTRO reads a bit like a “Most Exciting Places to Visit!” travelogue for Middle-earth. Consider:
  • The Legacy of Angmar
(Levels 5 till 50)
This volume lets you explore the dwarves of Thorin's Hall in Ered Luin, the peace of the Shire, the town of Bree and its lands, the Dunlending town of Lhan Garan in the Swanfleet, the fallen city of Tharbad and the old kingdom of Cardolan, the last big ranger hide-out of Esteldin in the North Downs, the Last Homely House in Rivendell and the Trollshaws on its doorstep, the evil city of Carn Dûm in Angmar, the ruins of Annúminas on Lake Evendim, the bitter cold of Forochel and the ring-forges of Eregion.
Help the Rangers of the North deal with the evils of Angmar so that the Fellowship can set out on their journey without having a dangerous enemy at their back.
  • The Mines of Moria
(Levels 50 till 65)
This story continues to the dwarf-kingdom of Moria and you can marvel at its past glory seeing the upper and lower levels and help the dwarves survive while fighting for their place. Travel to the golden city of Caras Galadhon in Lothlórien and start the war on Sauron’s old fortress of Dol Guldur in Mirkwood.
See to it that the dwarves can safely recover Khazad-dûm and that the evil of Dol Guldur is contained within its walls.
  • Allies of the King
(Levels 65 till 95)
The next volume makes you explore the magical lands of Enedwaith, the kingdom of Dunland and the fortress of Isengard. See the rolling plains of the Great River, fight the enemies of Saruman in Eastern Rohan, dread the cold land of Wildermore and marvel at one of the greatest man-made fortresses ever built, Helm's Deep in Western Rohan.
Help the people of both Dunland and Rohan and free Rohan's king. Find the Fellowship while they make their way south and ensure they survive the battles to come.
  • The Strength of Sauron
(Levels 95 till 105)
The fourth volume begins your journey to Western Gondor seeing the Paths of the Dead and helping Dol Amroth, after which you may see the splendour of Pelargir while making your way through Central Gondor, find the grand city of Osgiliath in ruins in Eastern Gondor and fight the battle of the Ring before the city of Minas Tirith. Follow the new king Elessar through the beautiful lands of North Ithilien and march on the Black Gate on the Wastes.
Aid the people of Gondor and witness the end of the Third Age. Mourn the lost friends along the way and get exited for the adventures that the Fourth Age brings.
  • The Peace of Middle-earth
(Levels 20 till 150)
This story sets up the wedding of Aragorn and Arwen. Discover how Minas Tirith fairs under a new king and queen.
  • The Black Book of Mordor
(Levels 105 till 130)
Follow the way through the unexplored territory of the Plateau of Gorgoroth and see the ruins of Barad-dûr and the Orodruin, the destruction of Dol Guldur, the dark forest of Eryn Lasgalen and the Dale-lands where you come across Lake-town and Erebor. See the delving of Járnfast in the Iron Hills, the cold north of the Ered Mithrin and its strongholds of Skarháld and Thikil-gundu, help the Beornings at the Vales of Anduin and end you journey in Minas Morgul to finish your biggest nemesis.
Find out what the Gurzyul are up to and find the Black Book of Mordor. Discover what drives the darkness after the defeat of Sauron.
  • The Legacy of Durin and the Trials of the Dwarves
(Levels 130 till 140)
The Legacy further explores the north. Start your journey at Skarháld and travel to the Wells of Langflood to see the Beorning town of Limlók and the secret village of Lyndelby, fight the battles on the land of Elderslade and enter the holy site of the dwarves, Mount Gundabad
Help the young prince in his trials to conquer Gundabad from the orcs and dragons and learn of the ancient history of the Dwarves.
  • The Song of Waves and Wind
(Level 140 till 150)
Rediscover the lands of Gondor after the war and see the beautiful skies above Pelargir and travel to the halls of Furukzahar, help the people of Anfalas and be amazed at the green country of Pinnath Gelin. Enjoy the heat of the Shield Isles and make your way along the Cape of Umbar to marvel at the city of Umbar Baharbêl, and its Neaths.
Learn about what transpired in Umbar between the Kindred of Coins, the Heirs of Castamir and the Church of the All-seeing and prevent for a new dark age to arise.
And that is not all! There will be more places to see in the future!

Protect the folk of Herne together with Boromir against the terror that passed through the town lately.

Shadows of Angmar

This book guides you from Bree-land towards Rivendell through the Lone-lands and the North Downs.

Evils of the North

From here the two starter experiences tie into each other.

Venture into the Misty Mountains and search for Skorgrím and the Black Rider with the assistance of Gloin and Gimli.

Uncover the secrets of Angmar's dreaded Watching Stones with the help of a Ranger in Aughaire.
Note: Completing this book will allow you to pass through Rammas Deluon [0.6S, 29.8W] without being instantly defeated.
Book VII - The Hidden Hope
Find the hidden Ranger refuge in northern Angmar and assist them in rescuing Golodir.
Note: Completing this book will get you the key to the gates of Carn Dûm (Instance).
Book VIII - The Scourge of the North
Rekindle Golodir's hope and help him in an attempt to defeat Mordirith, the steward of Angmar in Carn Dûm.

Uncover more about the mysterious Sara Oakheart while venturing to Barad Gúlaran.
