Info: 17th King of Rohan

Théoden was the 17th King of Rohan and the son of Thengel. Born in Gondor during his father's long exile from the Mark, he was raised partly among the Dúnedain and spoke Westron as his native tongue, though he also knew the Rohirric and Sindarin tongues. After the death of his grandfather Fengel, Thengel returned to Rohan, and Théoden later succeeded his father as king in T.A. 2980, at the age of 32.

Théoden was closely bound to his youngest sister, and after her death he adopted her children, Éomer and Éowyn, raising them as his own. His only son, Théodred, was slain during the fighting at the Fords of Isen shortly before the War of the Ring. In the years preceding the war, Théoden's health and will were undermined through the influence of Gríma Wormtongue, who served Saruman of Isengard and gradually weakened the king's rule.

On 2 March T.A. 3019, Gandalf freed Théoden from Saruman's influence. Restored in strength and spirit, the king took to the field against Isengard and led the Rohirrim to victory at the Battle of Helm's Deep. He later rejected Saruman's false offers of peace at Orthanc and renewed the ancient alliance with Gondor.

In fulfilment of the Oath of Eorl, Théoden rode south with his host in answer to the Red Arrow and came unseen to the Pelennor Fields. There he led the charge of the Rohirrim at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, breaking the hosts of Mordor. Théoden was mortally wounded when his horse Snowmane collapsed on top of him after an assault by the Witch-king of Angmar, but he died content, having struck down the King of Harad, the Black Serpent. He was quickly avenged by Éowyn and Meriadoc Brandybuck, who killed the Witch-king, and was succeeded as King of Rohan by Éomer.
