The Shifting Wood
Type: Wood
Region: Bree-land
Area: Old Forest
Location: [32.6S, 59.2W]

The Shifting Wood is a landmark within the Old Forest, in Bree-land. [32.6S, 59.2W]

This section of the Old Forest is famous for luring and trapping the unaware traveller into paths that cease and glades that close. Many explorers come to the Shifting Wood not just for the sensation of getting lost by tricky trees but they come here for the precious Cordofoneth's Flower that is found at the centre.

The Shifting Wood is not exactly the best route for travelling anywhere within the Old Forest, rather it is a time-consuming roundabout whatever way a traveller wish for. However, from the centre of the Shifting Wood, follow the west-most forest wall southwards until the Withywindle river. Or, go straight east and look carefully for a very narrow northward passage that leads to the Bald Hill, or carry on eastwards for the Old Man Willow and/or Tom Bombadil's House.

Lore

"Frodo began to wonder if it were possible to find a way through, and if he had been right to make the others come into this abominable wood. Merry was looking from side to side, and seemed already uncertain which way to go. Pippin noticed it. 'It has not taken you long to lose us,' he said. But at that moment Merry gave a whistle of relief and pointed ahead. 'Well, well!' he said. 'These trees do shift. There is the Bonfire Glade in front of us (or I hope so), but the path to it seems to have moved away!'" — The Fellowship and the Ring
