Glanduin

The river Glanduin (Sindarin for Border-river), is a river in eastern Eriador.

The Glanduin cascades directly from the peaks of the Misty Mountains in the southern part of Eregion, forming a natural border to Enedwaith to the south. The river then courses west past Mirobel and Caras Gelebren, running through Swanfleet where it forms the great delta of the Wadewater together with several smaller streams pouring in from the Stoor-vales. At the west end of the Wadewater, the Glanduin flows together with the Hoarwell coming in from the north. These two rivers merge and become the great Gwathló river, which passes Tharbad and heads south, at last emptying into the ocean by the ancient port city of Lond Daer.

  The ancient elven jeweltown of Mirobel lies just north of the banks of the Glanduin.

  Though a road to the crosses the river south of Mirobel, the water is too deep to ford and must be swum across.

  Further downriver, an elaborate bridge crosses the Glanduin to the Library at Tham Mírdain.

  The dried out riverbed of the Sirannon stops here where it used to flow into the Glanduin. Perhaps it will again one day?

  Though the road once carried on past the library, this path is blocked as the ruin collapsed, and only the north bank is traversible.

• 

  The Glanduin passes into the Swanfleet area, itself an important contributor to the wetlands located there.

  A second bridge leads across to Caras Gelebren, the ancient city of Celebrimbor's forgesmiths.

• 

  Though long since fallen to ruin, there is still a sense of forgotten wonder and mystery to the old ruins.

• 

  Beyond the fallen city, the Glanduin splits into two, and then three streams, losing much speed and depth. Thus, the Wadewater is formed.

• 

  These wetlands teem with wildlife, both harmless and dangerous. The region is named for it fleets of swans which frequent the waterways.

  The plantlife also flourishes here, with wildflowers, reeds, long grasses and trees of various kinds dotting the riverside.

• 

  Some inhabitants of this area find shelter in the calm rivulets, using them for boating or fishing.

• 

  Elven ruins dot the area, their splendor long since faded, and now several of them are hosts to servants of the Enemy.

• 

  Humans too, have left ruins in their way. Nimbarth in Cardolan is one such, and presides over a three-point joining of rivers.

• 

  As the Glanduin meets the Mitheithel just outside the toppled walls of Nimbarth, they join together into one great flow - the Gwathló.
