Tips for New Editors What is this language we use here?
- The code we use is called wiki markup. It has a lot in common with html, but is not exactly the same. See Wikipedia's Wiki Markup help document, for more information.
- LotRO-Wiki.com uses MediaWiki which recognizes both Wiki-Markup and many HTML commands, including CSS. Consequently, when you look at a page, you will find both on many pages. And, as you become more adept and begin playing with tables, you will discover that "CSS is your friend."
- Staying Current
- TIP: In the left column, you will see a link: "Recent discussions." That page is "dynamic," i.e. the MediaWiki engine updates it any time a change is made to a talk page. It's an easy way to "stay current."
- Red links and Previews
- TIP: When you use a Template (or any Wiki-link) on a page which you just edited, and that Template has an error in it -- typically a misspelling, it will show up on the page in "red," which typically indicates "not found," i.e. a spelling error in the name of the Template.
- Frequently the error is Singular vs Plural -- "tooltips" instead of "tooltip", for example. This will show up in a Preview as well as with a Save. It also shows up in red in the "Templates used on this page" listing at the bottom of the page, visible while you are editing it. (You may have to click on the triangle to expand the listing.)
- TIP: If you go to the "View History" for that page, and click on "compare selected revisions" (the default case is the two most recent), you will see, at the top of the page, the differences highlighted -- the old in Yellow on the left, and the new in Blue on the right.
- Removing "Stub" tags
- TIP: Many of the Creature pages you are editing (such as Fanged-stalker) will likely have "{{Stub/Mob}}" or {{Stub/Creature}} Article Management Tags (see also Article Management Tags/Display) at the top of the page to flag them as needing additional work. The needed work is typically the Lore-master inspects. Consequently, when you add the missing information, feel free to remove the Stub tag from the top of the page -- which removes the banner, and also removes the article from Category:Stubs/Mob or Category:Stubs/Creature respectively.
- Creature vs Mob
- TIP: When is a "critter" a Creature and when is it a Mob?
- Use "Mobs" when referring to enemies INSIDE an instance
- Use "Creatures" when referring to enemies OUTSIDE an instance
- How to Delete a Page
- TIP: We only give Administrators the power to delete pages, so if you see something that needs to be deleted, you can add the template {{Delete Page}} to the top. Sometimes, though, we like to keep old pages around for reference, even if they're not in the game any more. If that's the case, you can use {{Obsolete}}. It's somewhat up to your judgement, what needs to be kept around and what doesn't.
- How to Move a Page
- In the upper right corner of the page next to the "Search" box is a "down arrow." When you mouse over it and click on it, a drop-down appears allowing one to move a page.
- A new page will open where you can easily "fix" the name or the spelling. A one word reason is sufficient -- i.e. Typo; Spelling, etc.
- Changing the "Namespace" is rarely necessary.
- TIP: If you simply "misspelled" or "misnamed" a page, uncheck the "Leave a redirect behind" box.
- TIP: When you move a page if it doesn't get the "disambigpage" entry also changed, the page does not display correctly -- the "tool-tip" entry displays on the left instead of the right. This is true of most pages when they get moved.
- The matching of the page name parameter is not required, but is nice.
- However, some templates require that the "name" and "disambigpage" entries match in order to trigger certain categorizations.
- And always, refer to this for useful information.

- A guideline is similar to a set of rules and standards. The main difference is that a guideline does not need to be followed to the letter and does not have any serious consequences in such cases. Here on LOTRO-Wiki, all content that has a guideline as reference should be edited until it meets those definitions, but exceptions can be made with valid reasons.
- Pages in Category: Guidelines contain "rules" or "recommendations" for working with a certain topic or domain in the wiki.
