Lotro-Wiki.com:Documentation
(Redirected from Lotro-Wiki.com:Policy)
Welcome to Project:Documentation, which concerns writing and maintaining guidelines and help information for general editing and all other projects.
Scope
- All articles within the Help namespace / Category:Help
- All template documentation (overlap with Project:System Tools)
Policy Statements
- One aspect of the Great Documentation Project is "Policy Statements".
- In general, "policies" are integrated into various other documents rather than attempting to create a "rule-book" type listing.
- The three polices are the only formal policies defined as such. These are displayed on every page of the Wiki at the bottom.
- Lotro-Wiki.com: About - only other reference is in the Template: Welcome
- Lotro-Wiki.com: Privacy policy -- unreferenced except for the bottom of the page
- Lotro-Wiki.com: General disclaimer - only other reference is from Template: Disclaimer
- Other "policies" have been described as "guidelines" and embedded in other documents, if for no other reason than the simple fact that there is really no "policy making" process other than "User: Lotroadmin." Much of that which passes as Policy tends to be simply "the way things have been done."
- Over recent time, User: Sethladan and User: Magill have "chipped away" at the documentation problem. Writing/re-writing, etc. documents which currently exist (most of them were from "the beginning," 2007, and things both on the WIKI and in-game have changed dramatically since then) or which need to be created. The {{Template:Tips for New Editors}}, {{Template:Tools for Editors}}<nowiki>{{Template:Tips for New Editors}} and Help: Patrolling are a couple of recently created documents.
- Help: Patrolling was one document in specific which was an attempt to capture the "oral tradition" of the Wiki and render it into a policy-like document. The Tips document is similar, but not as "policy oriented" -- more "how to."
- So, in conclusion, Yes, feel free to "jump in!" I would suggest starting out by drafting a new page and then figure out where to put it later. I have found in working with this sort of stuff that the original outline morphs quickly as you are writing and discover more questions and points which you wish to cover; frequently resulting in splitting one document into multiples.
Plans
- Go through and update all template documentation as needed
- Continue the attempt to capture the "oral tradition" of the Wiki for the benefit of future editors.
- Gather together and organize as many of the various topics and references to "Style" into the "Manual of Style" and create any which are needed.
Completed
- Magill organized a lot (most? all?) of the template doc pages into the standard <template>/doc form
Work in Progress
- Consolidating all the "help" articles into Category:Help and the help namespace
- Organize pages into a logical progression for editors to learn about how to do "stuff"
- Refine the navigation template to reflect the above organization
Template documentation
Seth: Working from User:Sethladan/Template Notes, currently template-izing documentation with {{Documentation}} (updates will be posted to Project:System Tools)
"New" Editor Information
- The template {{Template:Tips for New Editors}} is a convenient addition to the template {{Welcome}}.
- Or, perhaps more meaningful, on promotion to Ninja or Editor.
- A suggested usage:
- Visit the Users Talk page.
- "Add Topic" -- "A promotion" -- using "Add Topic" makes the entry visible and obvious, rather than simply burying it in the stream of conversation.
- Insert verbage like:
- Congratulations! In recognition of your work, you have been promoted see: [[Lotro-Wiki.com: Ninjas]]
- {{Template:Tips for New Editors}}

Obtaining Item Information while in-game
Item Information
- As of Update 14.1, there are 90,300 items in-game!
- There are two tools available for obtaining Item Information. One is a raw data source and the other is a Lua Plugin which allows you to interrogate that database. Both are available at lotrointerface.com. Both are maintained by Galuhad.
- The Raw data Item Database: https://www.lotrointerface.com/downloads/info869-ItemDatabase.html - intended for use by someone writing a Plugin.
- To see information on the Items, use the Plugin: Item Treasury: https://www.lotrointerface.com/downloads/info870-ItemTreasury.html
Art Asset Information
- Asset Browser by Thurallor https://www.lotrointerface.com/downloads/info835-AssetBrowser.html.
- This plugin allows you to browse (apparently) all of the images in the game that it is possible for you to use without crashing the client. [This includes about 200,000 images, but excludes roughly 180,000 images that are compressed DDS.]
