Essence

Essences provide custom stats to items like armor and jewellery. Essences have tiers, item levels and quality. Most essences have one main stat but higher quality essences can have two.
The Essence system was introduced at player level 100. Starting at level 100 essences regularly drop from creatures, are rewards from quests, deeds, are bartered and crafted. There are, however, essences and slotted gear found down to level 50, albeit rarely.

Essences can only be slotted to items with an equal or greater minimum level: you can slot a minimum level 120 Essence in an item of minimum level 120 or above, but cannot slot it in an item of minimum Level 119 or below.

Quality

There are dozens of essences types. Essences with higher quality have better stats and are usually more difficult to obtain.

Tiers and Item Levels

Essence Tiers are found in the top left corner of the essence. Item Levels further detail the essence. Higher item levels mean higher stats. In some cases essences of the same tier will have several items levels and this increases the essence stats. Essence types

Essences are divided in types that can be socketed only in the appropriated sockets:

Basic Essences: normal essences enhancing the secondary stats (physical and tactical mastery, physical and tactical mitigation, critical rating and defense, finesse, block, parry, evade, healing and resistance) AND special (grey) essences with low enhancements for vitality and fate
Primary Essences: enhancing the attributes - might, agility, will, but NOT vitality and fate
Vital Essences: Normal essences which enhance vitality and fate
Cloak Essences: ?

Socket types

Throughout the game there are different types of essence slots present.

Socket Control Panel

The Socket Control Panel can be used to socket or unsocket individual essences. To access the panel, either shift-double-click a socketable item, shift-rightclick the item, or drag the item to the new essence slot on the character panel.

Can overwrite a socketed essence with a new one, destroying the currently socketed essence and replacing it with another of your choice
Can choose to unsocket an individual essence for Mithril Coin

Adding to Items

Only items with essence sockets can hold essences. To socket an essence, right-click on an essence, you will be presented with a pop-up similar to that for Legendary Items. The pop-up lists the items which are eligible to receive the essence. Select the item, and click apply.

Note: The item to which the essence will be added must be in one's inventory.

Removing from Items

Essence Reclamation Scroll allows essences to be unsocketed. Right-click the scroll and it presents a pop-up box. The pop-up box lists the items eligible for essence unsocket. All essences from a piece of gear will be unsocketed. Select the item, and click apply.
The Socket Control Panel can also be used to remove individual essences using Mithril Coin

Items with Essence Sockets

Starting at level 50, items with essence sockets regularly drop from creatures, are rewards from quests, deeds, are bartered and crafted.

They are rarely found before level 50, but they are out there
Empty sockets are found in armor, jewelry and pocket items
1 to 5 empty sockets for customized stats, most gear also has unchangeable basic stats
When you mouse-over an item, you will see the number of sockets and stats.

Tier 1 Essence

Player Level 55 has a rare opportunity to gain a yellow epic Essence. Below is an incomplete sample list:
