My stuff

Sandbox page for overhauling burglar traits for update 12

Categorization

Hi there! Awesome job with the Burglar stuff. A note about adding things to Category:Burglar Traits: Magill created the categories for the three different sets -

- and each of the traits you've added should be in one of those smaller categories. If we have them in those categories AND in Category:Burglar Traits then it becomes very redundant, so you don't need to add [[Category:Burglar Traits]] to those pages - just let the template take care of it.

Keep up the good work and be careful to double-check how things look in-game! If you play with a non-English localization and ever have trouble with some of the translations, just let us know so someone can take screenshots and verify for you. Sethladan 17:37, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the tips, Sethladan. I see some trait pages (i.e. Agile Hands get the "... set bonuses" category without me needing to specify it, while others Aim (Trait) don't get it. Could it be traits that unlock skills don't get automatically? Should they get it automatically, or should I need to specify it manually for those?
--Emri (talk) 18:52, 16 December 2013 (UTC)
Thanks to Seth! I ment to comment on this last evening, and got sidetracked -- I've already deleted the extra categories and created the three basic trait categories. If you look at Boilerplate:Skill Boilerplate:Deed or Boilerplate:Effect you will see how some of the "auto-catagorization" is generated. I only finished them last evening, and have not yet really worked on Boilerplate:Trait -- that's today's task.
In brief, for Traits, the entry: "Type=" begins the construction utilizing other parameters, including "trait-tree." It is possible to have multiple categories "auto-generated" as many different parameters will trigger them. so when "type=Set Bonus" and "Trait-tree=The Gambler" you get category "The Gambler Set Bonuses,"
None of this is obvious in the current Template:Trait/doc (i.e. the template documentation), which is why I'm re-writing it, trying to capture as much of this "intuitive" stuff as has become commonplace in the past year or two.
TIP: when replying on Talk pages. user ":s" to indent your comments to make them distinguishable from the one above them.

Cool, thanks. I am done reverting Burglar Trait from all pages now at least :)
Added the set bonuses category manually to those that didn't get it for now. From here I guess the traits get transcluded into various trees, tables and sections, right?

Aim (Trait) was one of those "interesting" problems. Simply put, the Disambiguation line needs to match the Wiki page-name, not the trait name. The Auto-catagorization is only triggered when the ACTUAL page name and the Disambiguation line match.

disambigpage=
name of Lotro-Wiki page for this item. Please retain {{subst:FULLPAGENAME}} in the disambigpage field. Otherwise you must use use ' i instead of any apostrophe ( ' )
This "quirk" is taken care of when you use the template "create deed", but NOT when you cut and paste from another copy of an item. You have to manually either insert the use ' i or the "{{subst:FULLPAGENAME}} .

Oh man, this is alot to learn, even with my web developer background. I have toyed together trait tree tables, and will make pagers for the remaining skills (specialization skills), when I have time and manage to login after the patching day --Emri (talk) 20:15, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

Next Step

I haven't examined it in detail yet, but I believe that the physical locations of the different traits are the same across all classes, and it would not be terribly surprising to discover that the number of points needed are also the same. In any case it's a 4 column layout, so shouldn't be a big deal... now that the hard work is done! (I just started work on the Hunter table : User:Magill/Sandbox-scratch-2#Hunter_Trait_Tree

Among the Specialization skills, there are 3 with the same name (Also shared by an existing skill). Any suggestion as what to name the pages as to distinguish them from one another?

The Guardian has a similar issue with Warrior's Fortitude. I named them [Warrior's Fortitude (Keen Blade)], [Warrior's Fortitude (Fighter of Shadow)], and [Warrior's Fortitude (Defender)]. So I'd probably make yours "Reveal Weakness (Gambler)", etc. -- Elinnea (talk) 14:38, 17 December 2013 (UTC)
Yes, that was what we did also with the Mounted Combat traits. "Subtitling" them with the different "stances." I would assume that each of different classes has at least one similar situation. That just seems to be the way Turbine does things. And, it does make sense. You can use the same skill in different situations and get different "results."
Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 18:56, 17 December 2013 (UTC)
I put them in with names like Elinnea suggested. All burg skills are in now and I brushed up the formatting on some of them (adding br-tags). Guess next step would be to make the specialization pages.--Emri (talk) 19:12, 17 December 2013 (UTC)
Have also started looking at the skills not tied to a tree. Is there any way to tell at what level you gained a certain skill except for actually playing through all levels? --Emri (talk) 11:11, 18 December 2013 (UTC)
Yes, there is! Just go to a class trainer and uncheck the box that says something like "Show only trainable skills". It will show what level all the skills are earned at. If you take a low-level character of the class to the class trainer, you can see the full array of skills. I have a few low-levels parked at class trainers, and another character on a server I don't normally use, who I can delete and re-create in any class to access the very lowest levels. -- Elinnea (talk) 14:08, 18 December 2013 (UTC)
