The Great Documentation Project (and other stuff)
Aha! another sucker, er... Volunteer, for back-room work! :)
- If you look at Projects you will see "the tip of the iceberg."
- Myself and User:Sethladan have been attempting to "fill-in the blanks" here on LOTRO-wiki - to document (i.e. write down) what up to now has been a largely oral tradition.
- The Wiki began along with LOTRO back in 2007. In the beginning much was discussed via IRC as the majority of the editors were based in Europe.
- Now, most all of the original contributors have left and (amongst other things) the IRC "habit" was not particularly well entrenched in the current crop of Lotro-Wiki editors. Consequently a lot of "we have always done it this way" has been lost. (We also have a Mumble server, but it doesn't get used. And there is also a separate test-wiki available.)
- This has been coupled with the fact that in the past 7 years MediaWiki itself has morphed and matured.
- One area in particular where this has been a problem has been with Templates. Dan and I have (as time and mood present themselves) attempted to "organize" the various templates in use. We have a "conflicting" system called "Boilerplates" which were originally intended to allow people to copy and paste information instead of use a template. Consequently, the Boilerplates and template/doc files (if they existed) and actual template pages themselves have grown apart.
- However, I can't say that we have been "organized" in what we have been doing. Every once in a while some "problem" will trigger a binge of editing :)
- Some things, like the Article Management Tags are probably "more consistant" than not, and all?many now implement the "nocat=y parameter and have /doc pages.
- At any rate, feel free to jump in and help out - and watch for questions. User: Neum is another template resource.
- And lastly, I should mention -- botting. We don't have any consistant approach to botting at the moment. Sethladan has an API based bot as does [[User: Matthew.zellmer]. I have one based on the PyWikipedia (python) code. I personally don't know Python, so I don't have any great confidence in my abilities in this area.
- Anyway, so much for my droning on -- Welcome aboard.
