Halbarad

Halbarad (Sindarin for High-tower) was a Ranger of the North, a kinsman and close companion of Aragorn. A captain among the Dúnedain of Arnor, he played a leading role in defending the northern lands during the waning years of the Third Age and later rode south to fight in the War of the Ring.

In the late Third Age, the Rangers of the North remained a scattered and secretive people, guarding the remnants of Arnor against encroaching darkness. At Esteldín in the North Downs, the last stronghold of the House of Isildur endured as a hidden refuge. Though the strength of the Dúnedain had diminished, they continued to resist the growing menace from Angmar. Halbarad worked to unite the scattered defenders of the North Downs as Orcs and other servants of Angmar pressed southward through Ram Dúath. Like many of his people, he combined skill at arms with deep learning, and he used both qualities to coordinate resistance and delay the enemy's advance. His efforts bought time while the Rangers awaited the return and leadership of Aragorn, who often ranged far from the North on secret errands. Even amid mounting threats, Halbarad remained mindful that he and his kinsmen might one day be summoned to greater deeds in distant lands.

During the War of the Ring in 3019 of the Third Age, Halbarad answered that summons. He led a company of Dúnedain south from Rivendell to seek out Aragorn. This force, later known as the Grey Company, originally numbered around sixty Rangers, though fewer reached Aragorn after the hardships of their journey. They found him at the Fords of the Isen in Rohan, bearing a message from Arwen and the royal standard she had prepared for him. Halbarad thereafter remained at Aragorn's side during the critical days that followed. He was present in the Hornburg when Aragorn used the palantír to reveal himself to Sauron, an act that hastened the Enemy's designs and set the stage for the final movements of the war. When Aragorn resolved to pass beneath the White Mountains by the Paths of the Dead, Halbarad went with him, alongside Gimli, Legolas, and the Rangers of the Grey Company. Through the haunted way they passed, summoning the Oathbreakers to fulfill their ancient pledge, and they marched on to aid in the struggle in the South.
