Lore
- "And so they crossed the bridge and passed the mill by the river and came right back to Bilbo's own door." — The Hobbit
- When Frodo set out on his quest and left Bag End with Sam and Pippin he did not choose this much easier route:
- "'We are not going through the village tonight. Too many ears pricking and eyes prying.' ... After some time they crossed the Water, west of Hobbiton, by a narrow plank-bridge." This might have been by the narrow ford where The Water bends north towards Rushock Bog. — The Fellowship of the Ring
- Much later we read:
- "As they crossed the bridge and looked up the Hill they gasped. Even Sam's vision in the Mirror had not prepared him for what they saw. ... Ted (Sandyman) gaped, for at that moment he first caught sight of the escort that at a sign from Merry now marched over the bridge. Dashing back into the mill he ran out with a horn and blew it loudly." — The Return of the King
