Arveleg, Son of Argeleb, 8th King of Arthedain, 16th Heir of Isildur.

During his lifetime, the father of Arveleg, Argeleb son of Malvegil, was the only King in Arnor that still had Isildur's heritage. As such, he claimed lordship over Rhudaur and Cardolan. The men of Rhudaur resisted this claim, and a captain of the Hill-men of that land formed a secret alliance with Argeleb's enemy, the Witch-king of Angmar. Thus Arveleg grew up in an era of War. The beginning and the end of the his reign were forged in battle. He came to the throne in TA 1356 when his father Argeleb I went to war against the newly allied lands of Rhudaur and Angmar, and was slain. Arveleg swiftly struck back with the combined forces of the Men of Cardolan and the Elves of Lindon and drove back the invading hordes for a time. For more than fifty years, Arveleg maintained a constant guard stretching from the Weather Hills, along the Great East Road, to the lower reaches of the River Hoarwell. Due in large to the defensive prowess of the Men of Arthedain and Cardolan, Angmar was temporarily pushed back and besieged Rivendell.

Personality: Arveleg was very concerned with his duty as King of Arthedain. His primary goal in life was to be a good ruler. He had seen many wars in his day, and worried about the future of his kingdom. This accounts to some extent for his serious personality. He could be considered stuffy, but those who knew him well knew that he had a good heart and a sharp sense of humor underneath the formal exterior. He loved his son greatly, and it bothered him that he could not be with his family more, since his duties often took him far from home. He regreted that he was not there for Araphor while he was growing up, and his greatest fear was that his son resented him for this or would not remember him. He loved music and singing; was an adequate player of the lute and had a good voice. Arveleg took a long time to get angry, but when he was provoked enough he would lash out at his offender. He was brave in battle and would not run from a fight. He could be obstinate at times and was seen by some as being slow to change.
