Bio
Velghar son of Hethghar was born in the year 2989 of the Third Age. He grew up in Aldburg, one of the oldest Rohan settlements southeast of Edoras. Velghar became childhood friends with Eomer son of Eomund. Velghar's father served under Eomund, brother of King Theoden and Chief Marshal of the Mark. Velghar made his father proud but also added years to his life with his rebellious spirit and yearning to ride into battle like his father even at young age.
In the year 3002 both Hethghar and Eomund were cut down and slain in a battle with Orcs at Emyn Muil. Two years after the death of his father Velghar's mother, seeing that his young wild spirit and lust for vengeance could not be contained, finally relented and allowed him to travel to Edoras where he hoped to train and become a true Rider of the Mark like his father before him. There he was reunited with his boyhood friend Eomer, who Theoden had adopted after the death of his brother, and both trained and were enlisted into Theoden's personal guard. Eomer became the Third Marshal of the Mark soon after and Velghar served ably and courageously under him as a Captain.
It was during this time that Grima "Wormtongue's" treachery slowly began to warp the mind of King Theoden and bend his will towards that of the evil white wizard Saruman. As Theoden's advisor his words soon began to hold sway over all of the king’s decisions. Velghar was consumed by anger towards Grima but his loyalty to Theoden held his rage in check for a time until he and his men were on patrol along the westfold when they engaged a platoon of Orcs who had crossed into the borders of Rohan. Several of Velghar's men and close friends were killed in the battle and he rode back into Edoras with grief and outrage riding beside him. In his report to the King he advised that all available forces under the banner of Rohan should ride out and meet the attackers before more Orcs could cross into the westfold.
Velghar, Eomer and the King’s own son Theodred argued passionately to the king asking for his guidance and the order to muster the Rohirrim for a swift strike but with Grima by his side Theoden could not be persuaded. In blind anger Velghar drew his sword on Grima and was promptly arrested and thrown into prison until further judgment by the King could be rendered and his sentence would be announced. In the dead of night as Velghar slept in his cell he was awoken by loud thud outside of his cell. Eomer walked into the room dragging one of the guards that he knocked out and threw the keys to Velghar. “Ride out of here my friend. You horse Holaseth waits for you outside. Find the wandering wizard Gandalf Greyhame and tell him that he is needed again in Edoras. Make haste my friend our time here is running out and I fear Saruman can no longer be trusted. The grey wizard was last seen in the town of Bree. Ride fast and bring him the dire news from the Mark.”
Riding through day and night Velghar made his way towards Bree. After nearly riding nonstop he finally made it to the Bree-land town and was directed to the Prancing Pony by one of the town guards when he enquired about the Grey Wizard. Gandalf was nowhere to be found there and had not been seen for weeks. He was unable to find the wizard but did cross paths with another Prancing Pony patron named Zille. “You stick out like a sore thumb here Rider from the Riddermark but that much is easy to see.” Velghar turned, “You have travelled to Rohan before then?” Zille just laughed as he smoked his pipe, “Yes, I am born of Rohan although it might not seem as obvious anymore.” Velghar looked at him in disbelief, “You say you are born of Rohan yet your name nor your appearance look the Rohirrim.” Zille looked around and then answered him, “My born name is Ryerdon but here I am known as Zille. I do not claim Rohan nor does Rohan claim me so I will be known to you by Zille as well. My travels have taken me far and wide so perhaps I can be of some assistance to you.” He continued, “I have heard you seek Mithrandir or you may know him as Gandalf Greyhame.” Velghar didn’t know whether to trust this shady individual but his options were running thin. “There are rumors abound that he was captured by the white wizard of Orthanc Saruman but those same rumors also say that he escaped.” Velghar’s interest was peaked although his better judgment told him not to trust this former son of Rohan. “Do you have any idea where I might find him?” Velghar asked losing patience. Zille revealed a smile, “We both have need to find the wizard, Velghar of Aldburg.” Velghar looked at him in shock but before he could reply Zille went on, “Like I said before I have been around and so asking me how I know your name would be fruitless. We must search out the wizard together if we are to find him before Mordor does you will need my help and I am in need of yours if to a lesser degree.” Velghar turned to walk away but stopped. Turning only part way without facing Zille he said, “We have an accord for now Zille but remember that the urgency of Rohan is more important than your life. If you betray me then you will meet your end swiftly and without remorse.” Zille only laughed, “I would expect no less of course.” And the reluctant alliance had begun.
