Harad Waste

The Harad Waste is the vast desert region at the heart of Jarmát (Far Harad), forming the core of southern Harad. Characterized by scorching sun, sweeping sand plains, and minimal vegetation, it is largely uninhabited except for scattered nomadic tribes of Haradrim who have adapted to its harsh conditions. Daytime heat gives way to bitter nights, and sandstorms frequently sweep across the open terrain, making the desert a hostile environment.
Historically, the Harad Waste forms part of the route connecting Far Harad to the Harad Road, which runs north through Ithilien toward Mordor. The desert acts as both a natural barrier and a strategic corridor for armies. Caravans and war parties traverse its expanse, especially during the War of the Ring, when the Haradrim brought their famed Mûmakil across the sands on campaigns for Sauron.
The landscape features rolling dunes, rocky outcrops, and occasional oasis settlements. Although little is known about its ecology, the Waste supports hardy plants and animals adapted to extreme dryness, as well as colossal war-beasts like the Mûmakil, known to Shire-folk legends as 'Oliphaunts'.
Occupying most of Jarmát, the desert extends southward into largely unexplored regions. It is bordered to the north by the more fertile lands of Shagâna and to the west by the coastal approaches of Umbar. Within the Waste, scattered crags, dry valleys, and rare pockets of jungle interrupt the dunes, though permanent settlements are extremely scarce.
The Harad Road cuts through the desert, connecting Shagâna and Jarmát to Gondor's southern roads. Caravans must prepare for extreme temperatures, sandstorms, and banditry, while armies use the route to move troops and Mûmakil through the Waste on campaigns.
The desert has been central to the deployment of Haradrim forces in major conflicts. Its open expanses allow for the maneuvering of Mûmakil, which serve as mobile war towers in battle. During the War of the Ring, the Harad Waste functioned as both a staging ground and a natural defense, deterring invaders unfamiliar with its harsh conditions.
