Some pages missing formatting
I've run into at least two pages recently that seemed to be missing the main page template (e.g. navigation sidebar, site logo and tabs, etc.), and were getting browser-default HTML layouts. The only example I've actually noted is:
https://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Item%3AShort_Fancy_Robe
but there was at least one other page I've run into recently, sorry I can't remember what it was. I thought it was a failed HTML file load initially.
Huh, and now when I test it again, it's working okay. Is this a transient problem when someone works on master templates or something? It failed with several reloads on the failing page, but other pages I looked at around the same time were still formatting normally. Weird...

- I've seen this happen once in a blue moon in the past, and it usually clears itself up pretty quickly. There are occasional hiccups in the system, one of which happened within the past week, but it seems like Lotroadmin got everything mostly caught up again. Hopefully you won't have any more of the same issues, but if things do persist, speak out again for sure. Thanks for bringing it up here! Sethladan 21:11, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
The passing of Saul Zaentz
Saul Zaentz just passed away (on Tolkien's birthday oddly enough).
An idea
I have no idea what I'm talking about here, but it suddenly came as a flash of inspiration while chatting about up-coming updates to the Moors.
- What is missing is a Middle-earth "Museum!" -- The Wiki has "most" of the needed materials, what is needed is the classic "curator's touch" to make a story line up out of a bunch of random objects. Objects which in and of themselves are important and each have their own stories, but which touch on the Larger world around them.
I our discussions, I pointed out that there are several aspects of the Moors which are probably totally unknown to the PvMP players in LOTRO. Start with the Ettenmoors page I wrote several years ago. The source materials for all of that are now gone. They were in the Lorebook and in Dev notes from years gone by... now all of which, like the Library at Alexandria, are Lost to future Ages.
So, besides watching for the 12.2 update and "fixes" for the Moors, there is much work to be done. (As if finishing Update 12 wasn't enough :) )
- Anybody have any ideas on how to "start" this Museum?
Thumbs up
We all spend time on this wiki to make it as good as it can be. I don't know about you, I always cheer up when I discover that people use the lotro-wiki and are super happy with it. So here's a blog post I found by a fan: My favorite lotro sites (and guess which one is on nr. 1!). Also, make sure to read the comments, they are the best. Keep up the good work! --Ravanel (talk) 12:12, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

Legendary Item Title Quests - a new category?
I've been looking at categories that would be helpful to have. Some categories have merely 15 pages in them or even less. But I'm not looking at removing any. I'm looking at creating one, but I'm not sure how to do it. It would be a collection of LI quests that reward Titles (the ones that have a burnt matchstick inside the quest ring graphic). I was just thinking that I found the Level 75 ones and the Level 55 ones, and that implies there are level 65 ones somewhere, but I'll have to look maybe in Lothlorien? Anyway, a list of them would help. Also am wondering if the lists could be made more helpful when they're covering several levels. For example, repeatable quests are a jumble of levels because they're alphabetical. There might be a way to create a page that organizes the list by increasing level, but I'm still a beginner. I'll be watching my talk page for replies. Thanks for any ideas. Acatlovertoo (talk) 19:10, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
- Adding a new (i.e. additional) Category to any page is basically quite simple. Preferably at the bottom of the page, (but you may find them at the top of pages also), simply add:
- [[Category: LI Titles]] -- or whatever you want to call it -- "LI Titles (55)" or "LI Titles (75)" might be appropriate.
- This will place that page in the named category. If the category does not exist, it will first show up in red at the bottom of the page with all other categories.
- If you then click on that red link, you will be taken to create another page describing that category. Add a brief description of the category AND, link it to another category as appropriate.
- I would assume: [[Category: Legendary Items]]
- If you want the two categories, it becomes a 2 step process -- create the two lower level categories 55/65 and link them to a category called LI Titles. Then link THAT category up to Legendary Items.
- Now with all that said. I don't believe that there are any Legendary titles at 65 -- because the title Level refers to the Level of the particular Legendary Item -- which is (or was) an undisclosed characteristic. Off hand, I don't know if the "Item Level" value just disclosed with Items and the Helm's Deep release displays on LIs or not. Have to go look.
- Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 21:02, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
- Ok, NO, Item Level is NOT disclosed for LIs. The "Minimum Level" refers to the minimum level of the character able to slot the item, not to the level of the LI itself. This has always been an issue -- namely that the LI's Level is not visible. The "level" which advances from 0-60 or whatever is a "different level," nominally called "item levels."
- Note that in the LI window, you can click on the "upgrade" button at the lower right -- for any select LI you will be shown those "thingies" you can apply to it with TP purchases from the LOTRO Store.
- Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 21:14, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
- I was thinking of quests, so the category would be LI Title Quests, and the page could be divided up into 55, 65, 75, etc... assuming there are title quests after 75, I don't have a leveled toon up that high yet. I've discovered that Mirkwood has the level 65 questgiver, too bad I went with Enedwaith because I'm up to the 75's now. I'm pretty good at doing dailies if there are any to do. But it was a pain going to Moria whenever I wanted to just grind for some relics without a group. I'm trying to help out here because once I get to 95, I know I'll forget the travails I had when I was leveling, so then I might not be as invested in helping out here. Thank you for the instructions, I'll give it a try.
- I also have noticed that you can buy a lot of things for the LI in the store, but I think I have all I need at my level. I do have dreams of making a good LI guide but, so much of what I know is learn as you go, that I'm not sure it's organized in my mind enough (the nitty gritty like auto-combine, and when to refine for best effect, advanced melding). Are there things you can buy through the store that are essential to the raiding toon? I imagine they would get a mention, but since I'm not at endgame, I wouldn't know about it. Acatlovertoo (talk) 07:23, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
- A couple of points:
- I assume you realize that you can still do those Mirkwood quests if you want the titles available.
- There was a time when (at least one) Weapon Title was necessary -- Sarnur -- certain mobs could only be damaged with Ancient Dwarf Damage. Other titles have always be benefits that could be bestowed upon a weapon, but were not significant in effecting outcomes except against exactly matched opponents. Today, Weapon Titles are something that most folks ignore.
- LI'S are a complex system which suffers from the classic "too many choices" and virtually no information. Check the Forums, there have been LI guides in the past -- I don't know how many (if any) survived last summer's Forum revision. But, you might find useful ideas and sources. Any guides is hamstrung by the lack of information available on LIs from Turbine. The still unanswered question is -- "What is the "?Item Level?" of an LI? It's not completely certain how many Levels now exist. At one time, there was a break (at 55, I think) which was visible with the Heritage Runes -- some only worked up to that level, others only worked above that level. I believe that all Runes now apply to all LIs. Is the undisclosed Item Level of an LI now equal to the "player equip" level?. I have not looked, however, for "normal" gear, when you embark on an Epic Battle with a low level character, the "up-scale" values are displayed on the character sheet. However, I don't recall looking at the LI panel.
- Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 15:01, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
- A couple of points:
At this point in the game, I'm looking for Beleriand damage as an optional Title, but I haven't found it yet. I haven't looked closely at Galtrev yet, so it might be there. Don't know how others feel but I see all those resistance listings (which I don't know if they're accurate anymore).. on the pages for mobs and I think... I don't want it to be only Common Damage. Also many of my toons use light damage, so Shining Star from Moria is useful (+5% light damage). Beleriand just seems to cover the biggest mixture of mobs, though for Enedwaith, Westernesse is good too. I can't find the Ancient Dwarf Damage title anymore, but maybe it's a vendor thing. I could look at someday upgrading the page to include a link to a new page that has the various vendors of different level titles, runes, etc. All in good time. Including Mirkwood. I'm way too focused on getting just one toon to 95 to stop and clean up missed quests. But eventually I'll get there. I'm not finicky about people changing my pages (it's a wiki after all, not the tablets of Moses), so if you know which quests are in Mirkwood, it would be awesome if you or someone edited the page to add them.
On that subject... I came from a different community of gamers where people just edited wiki pages and didn't get attrib or wanted it. So I'm pretty loose about people editing things I created. Feel free. I was a little surprised about the "coordinate with.." message because I'm concerned it would mean people won't correct errors I make, or add more information if they want. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Acatlovertoo (Contribs • User Talk) at 16:12, 1 March 2014.
- The "Under Construction" stub is usually used when there is a "big page" that is being worked on over time. Some folks use it extensively, others never.
- The Ancient Dwarf damage title was one of the ones available from one of the two quest givers there in Moria opposite the Stable-master in Dolven-view - Fastarr - Quest:The Training Hall - Guardian of the Deep Halls. Don't know if it still is.
- See Beleriand for sources.
Interesting things coming in Update 13
First pass on U13 is up on Bullroarer (no NDA).
- Bullroarer server will only be up on weekends for players. New builds being made available on Thursdays.
The Bullroarer "Hobbit to Isengard" run contained a LOT of good info. Some Random items I found of interest:
https://forums-old.lotro.com/forums/showthread.php?&postid=7121005#post7121005 (Post #250)
- 8- Are First Agers going to be in U13, or 13.1
- HoarseDev – They’re putting them in the BR build on Monday, so they should be ready for U13. They’re looking at dropping them in T3 skirmishes, some of the classic instances, and then potentially as a platinum drop in Big Battles. So there will be several places to get them.
Lots of PVMP stuff:
- 16- Is it true that F2P players will be able to go into the Moors – can you tell us how it works, when they can go and at what level
- Jinjaah - Visiting your stable master when you see the travel path to the Moors you will see a buff that you can buy for Mithril coins that will last for 6 hours, that enables you to enter the Moors at will. You can stack the buff if you’d like to stay longer, and it will work similar to Big Battles in that it will scale your gear up to an item level that’s on par with your main level. There are also three new vendors at the Freeps base where you can buy gear that level scales a bit differently than regular gear. It will actually maintain its max 95 level item level for 10 levels instead of just one. Those are statted in such a way as to make them comparable to an actual 95 version of their class with that character wearing PvMP armour.
- HoarseDev – It’s important to keep in mind that this starts at level 20 so at level 20 you can go there but the gear is statted in such a way as to really promote you moving forward and getting XP in the Moors (if that’s what you want to do), but it’s not going to be the best gear in the game. Even though it’s statted for PvP so you can hang on and contribute, but the goal isn’t for someone to come in at level 23 and be as powerful as someone who is at cap and has gone through all the rigours of the Moors.
- Jinjaah – He’s been reading the forums and getting tons of feedback, the council forums have been great in giving feedback too on how level scaling is working right now. If anyone has a BR client he really encourages you to get out there in the moors and try it out and give feedback on how you think it’s working.
An important definition!
- 46- What are the item level numbers on equipment used for. Is it a future development thing
- HoarseDev – The item level gives them a way of differentiating the potency of an item when compared with another item. For example if you are level 85 and can wield an item that is in the low hundreds, there may be many items in that range that you can wield. This gives you another way to compare them to decide which will be better for you. Item level tells you how much juice the devs put into a particular item. It’s not a future development thing so much as just another way of differentiating items. As part of getting difficulty level on track they need a broader variety of items available than simple equip level and rarity could provide.
- 60- Will hunters ever receive pets, even non-combat ones
': Rowan -' He thinks Sapience already answered that one with a Twitter pic he posted the other day.
- Sapience – Says go check out Twitter and his little friend there. He can say the easy answer to that is, yes. There is a longer answer they will probably talk about in future updates, but for U13 there is a little friend for anyone who is fortunate enough to find him and earn him.
- Rowan – There are three versions, too.

Power cost for skills
While I've been updating the Minstrel section of the wiki I've noticed that the grand majority of power cost tables are incomplete or nearly empty, yet they eat up a large segment of the page. Should we strive to greatly reduce the size of these tables (IE show power costs every 10-20 levels) or abolish it altogether and show the power cost at maximum level? Even then, there are so many modifiers to power cost is it really worth it?
Isilwe (talk) 16:18, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
There is so much information to update and keep up to date that I think this is probably best droppped all together. I haven't done that, for obvious reasons, but I figured I'd make my thoughts known and see what everybody else thinks.
- —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Isilwe (Contribs • User Talk) at 17:00, 31 March 2014.
- The basic problem is that the only way the detail data can be acquired is empirically -- having a toon of a particular level and recording the values.
- And the probability exists that as Turbine "balances" game-play constantly, those recorded numbers will be wrong at least 50% of the time.
- At one time in LOTRO, there were a number of players who were quite "obsessed" with "stats." There used to be a whole forum thread where such things were regularly discussed, and where people "divined" the math behind those stats. I say "divined" because Turbine has never divulged their algorithms nor confirmed the correctness of player versions.
- Today, that forum is long-gone and those players don't seem to be either around or as obsessed with stats as they once were.
- For me this is one of those "yeah, so" items. Personally, I never even look at power costs and the like, but that's just me.
- Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 15:58, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
- Power costs used to be readily available from the Lorebook for most skills, so tacking them on was easily done. At this point I'd be inclined to agree that collecting individual values is a whole lot more trouble than it's worth, especially as it's not always immediately obvious what level to begin keeping track for skills that are trait-gated. Sethladan 18:11, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
- Those who are interested in specific power stats are probably at a high level anyway, so maybe adding basic power cost at cap might be an idea, but I agree that the empty table most skills have at the moment is probably never going to be filled and accurate. So removing the tables may be the best solution, but then it should be removed for each and every skill.
- Faratalath (talk) 19:33, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
- As a side note, according to the Update 10 patch notes, skill costs are a percentage of the player's power pool, however, I suspect this may not still be true after Update 12's class revamps. Neum (talk) 07:15, 2 April 2014 (UTC)
- I've added the following to the Boilerplate for both Skills and Effects:
- The recording of values has been discontinued. (April, 2014)
Values were originally provided by the Lorebook, however, when Turbine discontinued the Lorebook in the Summer of 2013, the source of values became "empirical."
Hence the tables became virtually impossible to update or keep current as Turbine "tweaked" various performance parameters with each update.
• There are many skills still with "Values Tables", these tables should simply be deleted as those pages are updated.
- The recording of values has been discontinued. (April, 2014)
Interesting statistics from Valve/Steam
Valve/Steam does a monthly survey of the hardware in use by Steam users.
The results are here: https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/?platform=combined
You can select Windows/Mac/Linux specific information in mid screen. Granted, the survey is of "gamers" -- but the screen resolution is informative none the less.

Update 13 changes
- Update 13, The Breaking of Isengard has had 3 areas "revised" --
- The Misty Mountains - untouched by me
- The North Downs - untouched by me
- The Trollshaws - partially completed
- I have created a page to track the work which needs to be done.
- Please feel free to add items to that page as you find things which need doing and things accomplished.

Where does our traffic come from
- I have been of this opinion for quite some time, however, I have not seen any "reporting" which supports my intuitive conclusions.
- Following the change in Leadership at the New York Times yesterday, This article surfaced:
- "That’s not necessarily a reflection of any problems at the Times but the reality of how news is now distributed on the internet.
- Homepage traffic is declining at most news sites as readers increasingly find links to news articles from social media, email, and other sources."
- "... Overall traffic to the Times isn’t falling; it’s just coming in through the “side door” more often."
- What does this imply? Basically that the internal page links between articles on the Wiki are more important than any Categorical or Linear type listing.
- Before I started contributing to the Wiki, the only way I came to the site was through a Google search taking me directly to a page of interest. It was usually a quest, sometimes a task/task item. However, I wonder if the loss of the Lorebook produces a need for a categorized listing of topics. --Calico (talk) 01:13, 20 May 2014 (UTC)
- Around half of the traffic is reported to be from search engines and the other half is mostly bookmarks and direct links. --Lotroadmin (talk) 01:26, 20 May 2014 (UTC)

In-game communication
Have we got any way of communicating and coordinating updates on the Bullroarer server? Maybe a chat channel or a kinship? Neum (talk) 20:53, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
- The in-game audio communication is limited to the six players in a fellowship. Useable, but extremely limited and poor audio quality.
- We could easily create a kinship; especially now that they don't expire if you don't have ?8? players within 2 weeks.
- I've created a fellowship called Wiki Explorers look for "Valgolost" in-game.
- Similarly, we could just as easily create a chat channel that everyone could join.
- I've created a chat channel - /joinchannel wiki explorers -- which creates the channel "wiki" with the password "explorers" -- oops -- try again.
- /joinchannel wiki-explorers works much better :) -- don't forget to enable userchat X in your chat window
- Also add each other's toons as "Friends" - I've been playing mostly with my BR created toon - Valgolost, but I copied over Valamar and Valdicta from Gladden.
- And last but not least, we (Lotro-wiki) have our own Mumble server. It's available 24-7 for voice communication, independent of being logged in to LOTRO or which server. I think I'm the only one who has bothered to use it. (My Guild, theOld Timers Guild has run one for quite some time.) And yes, you can even use Mumble on your iPhone. (Don't know if they have created an app for Android, haven't looked for a while.)

- I'm usually on till midnight or so EDT.
- Just added Camphor (neum) into the Kinship. Now we are two :)

New Template or Mod of existing Item Template needed?
Moved from User talk:Lotroadmin
With Update 14 comes the new Essence System.
Accordingly Armour and Jewellery will have 3 to 5 "slots" for essences. Screen shots of two of the new Tool-tips are at the top of the Essence page.
As far as I know (i.e. as of Build3), the original Armour or Jewellery items will simply have open boxes where an essence of your choosing can be slotted. It appears that the items will be identical to past items, with the exception of the graphic for however many slots the Item will hold.
- That being the case, a possible solution would be to add a parameter "Essence = N" where "N" is the number of empty essence slots to place on the tool-tip.
There are 3 vendors (that I can talk to so far in DOl Amroth) who offer "slotted Gear" each of those - light, medium and heavy -- offer 6 pieces of gear all with 4 slots. Other gear is apparently available from Factions and as Creature drops or Quest Rewards.
Essences, like Legendary Items are apparently going to be the "wave of the future."
- Opinions -- anyone willing to do the mods? See the Bottom of the Essence page for the Quartermasters.
"Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 17:34, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
- I think we should wait, the link on the Essence page talks about having 2 slots for uncommon, 3 slots for rare, 4 slots for incomparable & 5 slots for epic, so it could be determined from the quality parameter. Having or not essence slots would be the other question, so maybe we could use the other parameter slot = Essence? So no new parameter so far would be needed! :) -- Goingbald (talk) 02:01, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
U 14 coming soon
From the Windfola S.H.I.E.L.D. run ---
- Sapience - Points out that they are doing their first press round tomorrow, and the news tends to get turned around pretty quickly so by the July 4th weekend we should be able to read a bit about U14 in the news, see some more details and some screenshots.
- Rowan - Yes, there will be commentary from MadeOfLions, Pinion and HoarseDev, and we’ll get a sense of what’s coming.
- Sapience - And then next week on July 9th, they will be doing the whole thing all over again, but this time as a preview for us players in a livestream. So we’ll be able to read about it, think about it and formulate some questions and thoughts and then a few days later come in to the stream and ask questions about it during the stream.
Personally I would guess that with the "live stream" on Thursday the 9th, that U14 will go live on Monday the 14th, unless something nasty shows up in Build 4 tomorrow.
U 14 Release date announced -- 14 July
Some output from the press briefing:
https://massively.joystiq.com/2014/06/13/take-a-tour-of-lotros-update-14/
According to that briefing, the tenative release date for Update 14 is Monday 14 July.
https://lotroplayers.mymiddleearth.com/2014/07/02/update-14-scheduled-for-july-14th/
- I should add, this probably means no Build 5, unless that is what Turbine intends to use for the Player-update on the 9th; only being up for the 9th and maybe the 10th.

Preliminary release notes on Beornings: (Keep in mind this is preliminary and subject to change)
From the PRELIMINARY Release notes on Beornings: (Keep in mind this is preliminary and subject to change)
Beornings are here! Every new Beorning character will start in the brand new starting area: Vales of Anduin. Visit Meadhollow while you get comfortable with your own strength. Beornings are designed to be a dynamic skin-changer class. Their basic skills emphasize the difference between human and bear forms. There are skills available in three different ways = those available in man form; those available in bear form; those available in any form.
Instead of power pools, Beornings build up Wrath, which fuels many of their skills. Any skills requiring Wrath will list the cost in their tooltip. Bear form requires Wrath to use and maintain. Certain man form or any form skills may also require Wrath. The Beorning trait trees are designed to allow tailoring your play style to fit a tank, damage, or support role.
I'll set-up some boiler plate to get things rolling -- however, keep in mind that MANY, MANY sections on the Wiki will need to be updated to integrate the Beornings into the Wiki.
- Known areas in need of updating/creation:
-
- Assorted templates:
- Template:Race-infobox
- Guide to Classes - this seems to be missing A LOT of classes
- Class
- Assorted templates:
-
- These are just a couple I thought about as I was waiting for the Patch Servers to come on line.
- Additionally, there will be the LOTRO-Store information about purchasing the class, and other similar things which will become obvious as folks begin updating/creating.
- Big patch!!!! 1 hour 15 minutes!
Update 15 scheduled for release 5 November
Update 15 is apparently scheduled for release on 5 November -- but no details or actual announcement has been made yet.
Frelorn posted this morning on the Bullroarer thread:
November 5th is the release date. We have not been posting as much as I would like in the past couple weeks due to several factors including getting the update ready to go, getting prepped for the Council visit this week and of course the death flu that has been traveling through the office.
|
Organizing Special Pages ("Wanted Pages")
Hi Everyone! I'm not sure if this is the best place to bring this up, as this talk page seems to be more about upcoming updates and edits to pages in the wiki.
I've been coming to and using LOTRO-wiki for a while now, however I only just started adding creature info (via my Lore-master) recently, with plans to add images later. Not really knowing what else I could contribute, I wandered over to the "wanted pages" page, where I found a lot of missing pages that needed to be created. However, it's all a bit overwhelming, as it seems like the list just goes on and on with no solid place to start. How many "wanted pages" does this wiki have anyway?!?
I'm assuming that most of the pages here are created by other users/contributors who are either selectively adding content via their own current projects, or are adding content while they're playing through the areas. So, it struck me. If there's anything that could make this wiki more whole and also help the team at the same time, it's having an organized pages that you can sort through and find out what articles are in your area, or what it is you should pay attention to. Is there any way to organize the "wanted pages" page by location? page type? level encountered?
But I'm also aware of the effort it would take for this to happen... Especially since this wiki is pretty old and has accumulated pages over a long time. How is the "wanted pages" page created? Is it auto-generated, or are people actively adding page links that need to be created? Is there any way to sort out all the "wanted pages" by content type/level encountered/area, without messing with the attached information (like the # of link to's)? -Gandalf124 (talk) 02:50, 30 November 2014 (UTC)
- It's generated automatically from the "red links" (links that are pointing to pages that don't exist).
- It's a gigantic task to do a wiki that is complete; don't worry if things are missing, don't expect the wiki to be perfect.
- Personally, I contribute as I go along; if I see something that is missing and I can do something about it then I do. This is even better than merely creating pages that don't exist, because if I am looking at something that is missing or incorrect then others will also find themselves there and when I add something it will surely be useful to them.

- Wanted pages is on of the "defaults" that MediaWiki creates. Personally, I don't use it for the same reasons you list. And the idea of "cleaning it up" is daunting... the last time I looked, it had several page worth of entries! :)
- The usual advice is -- pick a topic that interests you and work it.
- In terms of overall WIKI Improvement -- there is the infamous "Great Documentation Project." That is to say, trying to document various templates and techniques. As you noted, this Wiki has been around for a few years. Consequently there has be A LOT of "how-to" type information which simply "evolved" and was never written down, i.e. documented.
- One collection of "things to do" is the Projects page.
- The number of active editors has dropped off lately, so welcome aboard! -- there is far more to do than we have bodies to do it. I'm still leveling up a Beorning and trying to create in the missing information there... and haven't done anything with Gondor since the Beta! And then there are all of the updates and revisions that Turbine has done...
