Description

Eorl the Young was the 25th and last Chieftain of the Éothéod, and the 1st King of Rohan.

Born in the Wells of Langflood about the Éothéod capital of Framsburg, Eorl was just sixteen When his father Léod died while trying to tame one of the mearas. Hot-headed and brash, Eorl vowed to avenge his father, and with bow in hand ventured into the woods to hunt down the mearh. However, his anger cooled when he witnessed the beauty of the steed up close. Calling to the horse once named "Mansbane", Eorl became the first to tame one of the Mearas when the majestic beast approached to let him touch him. In newfound friendship, Eorl named the mearh Felaróf, upon whose unbridled back Eorl would lead his people to newfound glory, and a new era of opportunity for the Éothéod.

The Éothéod marvelled at the sight, and spoke of Eorl as being worthy of a crown, but he demurred. His long ago ancestor Marhwini the Proud had announced that no leader of their people would be called Lord until they had come to their proper home, and Eorl knew the Éothéod now needed more than living in Framsburg. Until they found it, he would remain simply Master Eorl.

In T.A. 2510, nine years into his rule, the twenty-five year old Eorl was asked by the errand-rider Borondir on behalf of Cirion Gwaedhir, Steward of Gondor, for aid in the war against the Balchotch Easterlings. Borondir presented a bloody arrow to show the direness of Gondor's need, and Eorl knew the time had come. Eorl gathered a mounted army from the Éothéod, and rode forth against the Easterlings. On the Field of Celebrant, they fought together with Gondor, and drove the Easterlings back to Rhûn.

In gratitude for Eorl's actions, Steward Cirion granted the depopulated realm of Calenardhon to the Éothéod. Swearing an oath of fealty forever to Gondor, Eorl accepted Cirion's offer and sent riders to summon the rest of his people to join him in his new realm. Henceforth, they then took to calling themselves the Eorlingas, or "Eorl's People". They would dwell in the Riddermark of Rohan, and Eorl and its descendants would be its kings. As such, the neighbouring Silvan Elves called the Eorlingas the Rohirrim, the "Horse-lords".

Ruling from the Rohirrim's first capital at Aldburg, it was said that Eorl never lost his famed yellow hair even in old age. In T.A. 2545, Eorl the Young, aged sixty, rode upon Felaróf one last time in battle against the Easterlings in the Wold, dying with honor in battle. Both would be interred within the first mound of the Barrowfields outside of Edoras, and the kingship would pass to Eorl's son, Brego.
