The Easterling Wars, also called the Wainrider/Balchoth War, was an open conflict between Gondor and invading Easterling forces that persisted for over six centuries during the mid-to-late Third Age. The conflict involved a series of prolonged campaigns and skirmishes across the eastern and southern borders of Gondor, with both sides suffering heavy losses over multiple generations.

The wars included numerous clashes on plains and strategic passes, with some battles proving pivotal in determining the overall course of the conflict. The Gondorians faced repeated incursions from heavily mounted Easterling raiders, testing the defenses and resources of the realm while forcing the stewardship to coordinate increasingly complex military responses.

Ultimately, Gondor achieved lasting success in repelling the Easterling threat through the combined efforts of Steward Cirion and Eorl the Young of Calenardhon at the Battle of the Field of Celebrant. Their cooperation was instrumental in securing victory and stabilizing Gondor’s eastern frontier. In recognition of his assistance, Eorl was granted the lands of Calenardhon, which subsequently became the foundation of the nation of Rohan.

The Easterling Wars demonstrated the resilience of Gondor and the enduring significance of strategic alliances in safeguarding the kingdom against persistent external threats. The conflict also had lasting implications for the political and cultural landscape of the region, shaping the borders and relationships of future generations.
