Marhwini the Proud was a Northman chieftain and the lord of the Thíuda, and a leading figure among the Northmen who survived the fall of the Kingdom of Rhovanion. Marhwini is particularly remembered for leading his people into exile and for establishing a new settlement at Avabárg.
Marhwini belonged to the ruling noble family of Rhovanion and was descended through his father from King Vidugavia of Rhovanion. In T.A. 1851, the Wainriders invaded Rhovanion, and the Northmen, together with the armies of Gondor, met them at the disastrous Battle of the Plains in T.A. 1856. King Narmacil II Romenturún of Gondor was slain, and King Marhári fell while leading the rearguard during the retreat. In the aftermath, much of Rhovanion was overrun, and many of its people were enslaved by the Easterlings, and the kingdom ceased to exist.
A portion of the Northmen escaped this destruction, and Marhwini led one such band westward. After a long wandering, the refugees reached the wild lands between the eastern bank of the River Anduin and the western eaves of Mirkwood. There they settled in the Vales of Anduin, forming the Ai-thúda people, later known as the Éothéod, the ancestors of the Riders of Rohan. Though he ruled as their chieftain, Marhwini never took a crown, as his father's kingdom was lost and would never return. He declared that no leader of his people would be called Lord or King until their people had come to their proper home.
Marhwini later played a significant role in the wars against the Wainriders. In T.A. 1899, he warned King Calimehtar Minastan of Gondor that the Wainriders were preparing to raid Calenardhon through the Undeeps. While the enslaved Northmen within Wainrider territory prepared a revolt, Calimehtar lured the enemy out of Ithilien by a feigned retreat. At the height of the ensuing battle, horsemen sent by Calimehtar through the lightly guarded Undeeps joined with a great éored led by Marhwini, and together they drove the Wainriders back into the East.
