Northmen
The Northmen are the people living in the northern lands of Rhovanion. Arriving in the area during the Second Age, they've remained until the end of the Third Age, though not without change.
In the Second Age, the Northmen were named the Thíuda. During the War of the Last Alliance, they were led by Huneric Hundred-slayer.
In the Third Age, the Thíuda become the Ai-thúda, and then the Éothéod. They settled in the Vales of Anduin, and later, the Wells of Langflood where Framsburg became their capital.
Centuries later, Steward Cirion of Gondor asked the Northmen for aid against Easterling invaders. Eorl the Young answered the call, leading his Northmen south on horseback. The Éothéod crushed the Easterlings and wiped them out west of the Anduin. In gratitude, Cirion granted Eorl the depopulated Gondorian land of Calenardhon to live in as his own. This land would become known as Rohan, and Eorl was the first King of the Rohirrim.
Though the Rohirrim originate as Northmen, they are usually not counted as belonging to the Northmen any longer. Their lands lie south of the traditional Northmen lands, much closer to Gondor.
Northmen still live in Rhovanion at the end of the Third Age. Among them are the Beornings, the Wood-folk, and the Dale-folk.
