The Defence of Minas Tirith is an Epic Battle introduced in Update 17. It can be run as a Solo/Duo instance by characters Level 10 and higher as well as a Small Fellowship (Three) version.

All players are "Level Scaled" to level 100. Equipment is also scaled and Virtues are scaled to at least level 14.

Lore

After crushing the gondorian forces at Osgiliath, the Morgul-host advances quickly across Pelennor Fields, making for the capital of Gondor - Minas Tirith, the White City, and the seat of power of steward Denethor. Siege machines have been constructed in the ruins of Osgiliath, and Orcs, Southrons and Easterlings alike now march towards the black outer walls of the great stronghold of Men, under the command of the Black Commander of Mordor - the Witch-king of Angmar. The Nazgûl fly above on their fell steeds and seek to strike terror into the hearts of the defenders, for fear is one of the Enemy's greatest weapons.

But hope is all but lost in Minas Tirith. Previously to the fall of Osgiliath, reinforcements from the southern fiefdoms arrived in the city, lead by Imrahil of Dol Amroth and the lords of the South, amongst them Forlong the Fat of Lossarnach, Duinhir of Blackroot Vale, Golasgil of Anfalas, and Hirluin the Fair of Pinnath Gelin. The White Rider, Mithrandir, rallies the defenders and inspires them to stay strong against the dark tide of Mordor, keeping their spirits high. Aid has also been requested from the Rohirrim, who will surely ride to their allies aid.

Now the enemy assaults the walls, and the soldiers of Gondor must prepare to stand fast and hold their ground, if the White City is to last the night that now darkens the skies above Pelennor Fields...

Bestowal Dialogue The Defence of Minas Tirith "The War for Gondor begins as Sauron's armies march for Minas Tirith. Can the Men of Gondor master their fear before the Enemy claims the White City?" Background The War for Gondor begins as the hosts of Minas Morgul and Mordor make for Minas Tirith. Merit Rating This quest starts with empty Merit Rating. Gain Merit from: Keep defenders alive Defend supplies and armaments Protect siege weapons and barricades Topple the Enemy's siege towers Defeat the Enemy's mightiest servants Objective 1 Talk to Mithrandir when you are ready to begin Imrahil and the Lords of Gondor must survive the battle Mithrandir is standing near the baths of Minas Tirith. The Enemy has begun the siege of Minas Tirith. You should speak to Mithrandir before the battle begins. Mithrandir says, "I am glad you have come at this dark hour, <name>. Sauron's armies have encircled the city and now only battle can decide the fate of Gondor." Mithrandir says, "The strength of Men shall be tested this day. Let us hope we have done enough to ensure that their courage does not falter!" Mithrandir says, "The Prince of Dol Amroth and the Lords of Gondor have gathered in the tower above. Come, we must meet them before the battle is joined!" Mithrandir: 'The Dark Lord commands the full weight of his armies to march against Minas Tirith hoping to break any defence that yet remains and deal a mortal blow to the defences of Men. A loss this day spells only doom for every living creature in Middle-earth. We cannot fail - we must not.' Objective 2 Defend the walls of Minas Tirith from the Enemy Imrahil and the Lords of Gondor must survive the battle The Enemy has begun the siege of Minas Tirith. You must hold against the Enemy's forces. Imrahil, Prince of Dol Amroth says, "Mithrandir! You have come just in time!" Imrahil, Prince of Dol Amroth says, "Their forces wield all manner of weapons and great towers of which I have never seen the like loom above them all." Imrahil, Prince of Dol Amroth says, "They do not march yet, but I see their ranks shifting restlessly. It cannot be long now." Imrahil, Prince of Dol Amroth says, "We must take our positions at once if we are to stand against them." Mithrandir says, "I shall stand beside you then and keep your men from despair!" Imrahil, Prince of Dol Amroth says, "You inspire hope even in the darkest of times, Mithrandir. The Men of Gondor shall be honoured to fight at your side." Imrahil, Prince of Dol Amroth says, "The din of the Enemy's armies grows louder still. We must move now!" Imrahil, Prince of Dol Amroth says, "It is time - they will not wait any longer." Forlong the Fat says, "So it is. The Enemy cannot even abide a brief conversation... a shame. I shall meet my men on the wall!" Hirluin the Fair says; "My men await me as well. Duinhir, call your sons and let us go!" Duinhir of Blackroot says; "Duilin! Derufin! The time for scouting is over. Follow me onto the wall!" Duilin, Son of Duinhir; "Of course, Father. Derufin, stop wasting your arrows and get in position!" Derufin, Son of Duinhir; "Call it a waste, brother. I've done more to thin their numbers than all this talk!" Imrahil, Prince of Dol Amroth says, "<name>, join us on the northern wall!" Imrahil calls out, 'Look to the fields! A siege tower of the Enemy approaches!' Imrahil shouts, 'Weaken those grapnels and lessen their burden on the wall!' Imrahil shouts, 'Make haste! Assault the tower and set it aflame!' Imrahil calls out, 'The Tower burns! Escape to the wall before it collapses!' Mithrandir says, "We must move on now to aid the other defenders! The hope of Gondor cannot falter!" Mithrandir shouts, 'We must move to aid the other defenders!' Imrahil calls out, 'Look to the fields! A siege tower of the Enemy approaches!'
