King Thorin III Stonehelm (Northern for Bold) is the 6th and current King under the Mountain and ruler of Durin's Folk, recently having succeeded his father Dáin II Ironfoot. He is brother to Náin the Slakeless, Lord of the Iron Hills, and the father of Durin. Thorin rules from the Hall Under the Mountain in Erebor, the Lonely Mountain in Eryn Lasgalen and the Dale-lands. Since his grandfather Náin Orcsfoe is one of the Marasrân, Thorin Stonehelm is counted among the Kharum-ubnâr.
Thorin was likely born in the Iron Hills during the lordship of his father. In his youth, he witnessed the return of Durin's Folk to the Lonely Mountain after long years of exile and wandering. With the death of King Thorin Oakenshield and both his nephews, Thorin's father was crowned as Dáin II as King Under the Mountain and over all the Longbeards, and thus Thorin became the prince of Erebor.
During the War of the Ring, at the age of 153, Thorin fought in the Battle of Dale against the Easterlings. After the fall of his father at the gates of Erebor, slain alongside Brand, King of Dale, Thorin took refuge within the mountain and succeeded Dáin as King under the Mountain, earning him the nickname Stonehelm. When news of the downfall of Sauron reached the enemy host, the Easterlings lost heart, and the Dwarves and Men issued forth from Erebor, routing them and driving them back beyond the River Carnen.
Under Thorin III's rule, Erebor and Dale were rebuilt, working closely with Bard II, son of Brand, and both realms prospered anew.
