The King under the Mountain is an honorific earned by the King of Durin's Folk who rules from beneath Erebor, the Lonely Mountain.
Despite the fame of the title, very few dwarven kings have held it, as the rule has been twice broken - once when Thorin I himself relocated to the Grey Mountains, and once again when Smaug came to the mountain, ousting the dwarves from their home.
The title has been given to the following six Longbeard Kings:
- Thráin I, the 1st King under the Mountain, who founded the kingdom in T.A. 1981 after the dwarves had to flee Khazad-dûm after the release of Durin's Bane. He ruled for 209 years, until his death in T.A. 2190.
- Thorin I, who ruled as the 2nd King under the Mountain for a mere 20 years between 2190 and 2210 before he abandoned Erebor to found the kingdom of Grárik in the Ered Mithrin.
- Thrór II returned to Erebor after five generations of Grárik kings, which ended when Vethúg Wintermind killed Dáin I. As the 3rdKing under the Mountain, Thrór ruled well from Erebor for 181 years, his rule lasting from 2589 until 2770 when he and his people were driven away by the arrival of the great wyrm, Smaug. Thrór would never return, murdered by Azog before he could reclaim any of the old dwarven kingdoms, sparking the Sixth War of Dwarves and Orcs.
- Thorin II Oakenshield led a great quest to free Erebor from the clutches of the dragon, Smaug. He was successful in this endeavour, and briefly reclaimed the title as the 4th King under the Mountain, only to be slain in the Battle of Five Armies shortly thereafter.
- Dáin II Ironfoot was crowned the 5th King under the Mountain after Thorin II Oakenshield's quest to free Erebor from the presence of Smaug. He ruled for 78 years from T.A. 2941 - 3019, when he was killed in battle before the gates of Erebor, thus passing the title to his son.
- Thorin III Stonehelm is the 6th and current King under the Mountain. After initially forbidding expeditions to the Grey Mountains, he eventually relented after his son Durin's initial successes, eventually overseeing the retaking of Gundabad, though he himself remained ensconced beneath the mountain.
