Thorin I was the King of Durin's Folk for ninety-nine years. He was the son of Thráin I and heir of Durin the Deathless, being the great-grandson of Durin VI.[1]

Biography

Thorin was born after his father Thráin had abandoned Khazad-dûm and established the Kingdom under the Mountain in Erebor.[1]

In TA 2190, Thorin succeeded his father as King under the Mountain. During his reign he learned that the majority of Durin’s Folk were gathering in the Grey Mountains, which were rich in resources but largely unexplored. In TA 2210, Thorin abandoned Erebor and relocated with his people to the Grey Mountains, reuniting with their kin.[1]

Thorin I ruled there until his death in TA 2289, aged 254. He was succeeded by his son Glóin.[2]

Thorin’s sixth great-grandson, Thorin II Oakenshield, would later reclaim Erebor from the dragon Smaug.[1]

Etymology

The name Thorin is derived from Þorinn, meaning "bold".[3]
