- Inside the starter instance, take every quest marked “Optional” from the Introduction page before speaking to the final NPC, or they vanish forever.
- [5] Fishing hobby and intro quests
- Do NOT learn fishing from any the starting area Hobby Masters. Learn fishing at around level 40 from Haldúr in Rivendell. He will offer you Quest:Hook, Line, and Sinker, then acquire all of Fish‑tales, Teach a Man to Fish and One Fish, Two Fish but do not complete any of them until all four are accepted. Finishing one will cancel the others.
- [5] “A Little Extra Never Hurts” (Part 1) - once per server
- If you missed the initial offer in the Introduction, you can still start Part 1 at level 5 from the blacksmith Skardí Bendblade in Swanfleet.
- [5‑11] Elf and Dwarf prologue stories
- After the starter instance you can acquire both dwarf‑path “At the Behest of Unnarr” and elf‑path “At the Behest of Cardavor” before advancing Volume I. Each path grants unique quest text and rewards. If you complete any of the paths before acquiring the other, they will become unavailable. You can also pick-up the Shire Epic Prologue - Quest:Prologue: Mundo's Complaint in Little Delving, the Bree-land Epic Prologue - Quest:Prologue: Burying the Dead in Archet and the Prologue to Before the Shadow - Quest:Prologue, Chapter 1: Something Different in Mossward.
- [5] “A Letter from Combe” (special edition quest)
- Owners of the Riders of Rohan Legendary Edition and VIP players receive A Letter from Combe at level 5; it starts New Arrival in Combe. The letter cannot be reacquired if deleted.
- [5] Worries from Waymeet (The Shire)
- The Shire quest Worries from Waymeet disappears once you pick up the next quest in the chain, so pick it up early in Michel Delving.
- [5-7] Outfitting Yourself and Others and Crafting introduction quests
- By opening your gifts you will receive an Item:Outfitting Yourself and Others. The item starts this tutorial quest. Deleting the item before turning it in blocks the quest permanently. Some one-time crafting tutorial quests can become unavailable after you complete your vocation introduction, so pick up Quest:Crafting: The Maker's Hall in Thorin's Gate, Quest:Crafting: A Terrace in Celondim in Celondim, Quest:Crafting: Michel Delving Craft-fair at the Michel Delving Craft-fair, Quest:Crafting: Strong of Arm and Sharp of Mind and Quest:Builders, Bookworms and Blacksmiths in Archet Dale,
Before leveling any particular profession you can complete tutorials for all professions (by switching to an new profession once the tutorial is complete). This results in obtaining the following Category:Vocation Titles and Category:Crafting Deeds, which in turn result in several Item:Universal Ingredient Pack when simultaneously completing Quest:Practice Makes Perfect
- [8] Radlaw quests during “Village in the Sky”
- While on Objective 2 of Village in the Sky, accept and complete the Radlaw quests: A Merchant’s Quarry and Leisure Lost in Radlaw. They vanish once you advance the main quest.
- [8‑93] Bingo Boffin title choices
- Throughout the Ballad of Bingo Boffin several quests let you pick only one of two exclusive titles (e.g. “Seeker of Memories” / “Keeper of Memories” in “Bingo’s Scattered Thoughts”). Choose carefully — unselected titles cannot be reclaimed.
- [10‑130] Landscape Difficulty deeds
- Start Difficulty 3: Fearless before level 11 and never set difficulty below 3 until level 130 to keep the Landscape‑Difficulty deeds active. The titles from these deeds are bestowed account-wide upon completion.
- [10‑20] “Town‑to‑Town” travel chain & Lonely Frontier
- There are several breadcrumb quests that connect early zones, and they can cancel each other out if done out of order. In particular, decide whether to do Shire to Bree OR Gondamon to Bree (you can only do one of these two). After that, make sure to complete Bree to Trestlebridge. The quest Quest:To the Lonely Frontier (vector from Trestlebridge to the Lone-lands) must be completed before you physically visit the Forsaken Inn. It’s only offered between level 11 and 19. If you enter the Lone-lands and speak to NPCs at the Forsaken Inn prior to doing this quest, To the Lonely Frontier will no longer be available. Note: An additional Trestlebridge to Ost Guruth” was made obsolete in a 2022 update.
- [15] “A Pressing Matter” - quest from item
- At level 15 a mailed item, Pressing Matters, starts A Pressing Matter. Deleting the letter blocks the quest.
- [15] “Building the <Race> Homestead”
- Choose one housing intro quest such as Building the Bree Homestead; starting any variant locks out the others.
- [20] Quest:Horses for Hire is unavailable if Quest:The Forgetful Dwarf is underway or completed.
- [20-150] Anniversary Scavenger Hunt Quests
- or the Anniversary Scavenger Hunt events, do not advance the wrapper quests too early. Each year has wrapper quests (e.g. Eriador Scavenger Hunt and Scavenger Hunt). Do not turn in a Year X wrapper until you have finished all individual scavenger quests for that year, or you may lock yourself out of any unfinished ones. (Advancing the Eriador wrapper is independent from the Year wrappers, so those can be done separately.)
- [22] ‘‘Candac’s Delay’’
- Quest:Candac's Delay is unavailable if Candac’s Obligation is completed first. Pick it up first in Bree-town, close to the west gate.
- [22-23] ‘‘Do You Know…Candaith?’’, ‘‘Forsaken and Forlorn’’ and ‘‘Word to Anlaf’’
- Start and complete Quest:Do You Know...Candaith? from north of the Weatherway in Bree-land. It is unavailable if you have already spoken with Candaith in an earlier errand. When talking to Candaith pick-up Quest:Forsaken and Forlorn but do not travel to the Forsaken Inn yet. Go back to the Weatherway in Bree-land and pick up Quest:Word to Anlaf. ‘‘Forsaken and Forlorn’’ is missed if you acquire or finish ‘‘Missing Supply Cart’’ or ‘‘Word to Anlaf’’. ‘‘Quest:Word to Anlaf’’ is unavailable if you have already spoken with ‘‘Anlaf the Forlorn’’ on a prior errand.
- [28] Favour of the North‑downs is a unique reward from The Troll‑keeper.
- [32‑72] ‘‘Afterword …and Answers’’
- First complete Quest:Afterword: In Memory of the Fallen from the Before‑the‑Shadow epic Quest:Book 2, Chapter 7: Questions, then run ‘‘…and Answers’’ during the Isengard Depths quest‑line, between Quest:Chapter 18: The Captive and Quest:Chapter 26: Escape from Isengard.
- [30] Another Matter of Importance - quest from item
- Another Matter of Importance is a quest triggered by a unique item. If you acquire the Another Matter of Importance letter (for instance, from an NPC or loot around level 30), use it to start Quest:Another Matter of Importance rather than discarding it. This item is only given once, and if lost the quest cannot be started later.
- [30] Foreword
- Fires in the North vs. Epic Volume III
- The quest Quest:Foreword: Fires in the North (Evendim) is a special prologue that unlocks swift travel to Candaith’s camp. It becomes unavailable if you have already started Volume III, Book 1 of the Epic (Chapter 1 “Ranger of the Fields”). To avoid missing this quest and its travel perks, make sure you pick up and complete Foreword: Fires in the North before beginning Book 1 of Volume III.
- [32] A Dangerous Road (Evendim)
- The quest Quest:A Dangerous Road leads into the Evendim storyline. If you progress that story too far (specifically, if you start Quest:Calenglad Remained which comes later in the chain), A Dangerous Road can no longer be obtained. In practice, just ensure you do “A Dangerous Road” as it becomes available, before doing the quests that follow it, to avoid any chance of it locking out.
- [33-39] To the Last Bridge (Trollshaws)
- The quest Quest:To the Last Bridge in the Trollshaws can be missed depending on how you handle certain other quests in the area. In particular, if you complete some of Alphlanc’s quests (or possibly other quests given by Anhebir) that advance the story, the opportunity to do “To the Last Bridge” may disappear. To be safe, do To the Last Bridge early on when questing in the Trollshaws, before doing later-stage quests from Alphlanc and company.
- [38] Orchalwë’s Mission instance (Evendim)
- Quest:Orchalwë's Mission is a unique instance in Evendim (involving Orchalwë at Ost Forod). Its quests are only available during a certain stage of the Evendim regional story. If you advance the Evendim storyline past that point (for example, after Orchalwë leaves Ost Forod), you will not be able to start “Orchalwë’s Mission.” Complete this instance and its quests as soon as they are offered.
- [44] An Understanding (Enedwaith)
- During Quest:The Rite of Clúcath in Enedwaith, an NPC offers Quest:An Understanding before you enter the Clúcath instance. This side-quest is only available in that brief window. Once you start the instance for “The Rite of Clúcath,” you can no longer pick up An Understanding, so grab it beforehand (during the ritual preparations).
- [45] “Distant Relations”, “Northern Threat”, or “The Lost Fellowship” (Kauppa-kohta vectors)
- When questing around level 45, you may find up to three vector quests leading to the Kauppa-kohta camp in Forochel: Quest:Distant Relations, Quest:Northern Threat, and Quest:The Lost Fellowship. These are mutually exclusive breadcrumb quests—accepting one will typically lock out the others. Only one of the three can be completed by a single character.
- [48] The Elves of Eregion (vector quest)
- Quest:The Elves of Eregion is a level 48 vector quest leading into Eregion. It can only be picked up while you are between level 48 and 52. After level 52, the quest will no longer be available from the quest giver. If you plan on doing this transitional quest, make sure to snag it during that level window.
- [49-50] Tarnished Bracelet quest chain (Garth Agarwen)
- In the Lone-lands, the Tarnished Bracelet is a unique item that begins a quest chain involving the spirits Dírdrë and Éa. This item drops in Garth Agarwen. If you get the Tarnished Bracelet, use it to start its quests before completing the final Garth Agarwen quest Quest:End the Nightmare. If you finish “End the Nightmare” (the GA finale) first, the NPCs for the Tarnished Bracelet chain will disappear, making that chain no longer accessible.
- [50] ‘‘Expeditions’’ breadcrumb quests
- Finish the Expedition quests on your way to Moria before the Book 1 Chapter 8 instance. If you advance the Epic story line past Chapter 7 without doing them, those expedition quests will no longer be offered.
- [50] “The Fall of Moria”
- “The Fall of Moria” is the name of an epic conclusion instance which exists in two forms: one as part of Volume II (Epic), Quest:The Fall of Moria (Epic) and one as a stand-alone quest inside Moria, Quest:Instance: The Fall of Moria. If you complete one version, you cannot do the other on the same character.
- [60] Asmund’s quests vs. Limhendeth’s quest
- In one quest arc around level 60, you encounter a decision point between aiding Asmund or Limhendeth (for example, in Moria or Mirkwood content). You can do the series of quests for one or the other, but not both—choosing one side will lock you out of the other side’s quests. (This is by design, similar to other story branches.)
- [61] “The Dark Shore” expedition quests
- The Dark Shore is a quest chain (in Mirkwood) involving expeditions. Be aware that the instance quests tied to Quest:Foreword:_The_Dark_Shore must be completed when available; if you progress the Mirkwood epic past that point, you won’t be able to run those expedition instances later.
- [62] A Matter of Doubt or Feeding the Company
- In the Isengard prison dailies (around level 62), you will get either Quest:A Matter of Doubt or Quest:Feeding the Company as a quest to help prisoners. These two are mutually exclusive on any given day (only one shows up at a time). While they are repeatable, you might need to come back on different days to see each one. Only one can be active at once, so if you do one and turn it in, you’ll have to wait for the other to appear on a different day.
- [65] Erebrandir’s Horseshoe (unique item)
- Erebrandir’s Horseshoe is a unique pocket item rewarded from Volume III, Book 2, Chapter 4 (Quest:Chapter 4: Riding South). This fun item is one-of-a-kind - make sure you hang onto it (don’t sell or discard it) because there is no way to obtain it again if lost.
- [65-148] Halros Should Go or Halros Should Stay (alternative story)
- In the later Epic (extending into the Umbar storyline), you will have to choose whether Halros “Should Go” or “Should Stay” at a certain point. This choice will branch the story and lead to a different follow-up quest in Umbar. You can only see one of the two story outcomes on a single character.
- [66-67] Land of the Stag or The Valley of Bones (Epic Vol. III)
- In Volume III, Book 4, Chapter 2, the fellowship splits and you must choose to go either west or east. This is represented by two quests: Quest:Chapter 2: Land of the Stag (western route) and Quest:Chapter 2: The Valley of Bones (eastern route). Completing one will foreclose the other. Chapter 3 will proceed differently based on your choice, but both converge later in the Epic. Just note you cannot do both quest paths on one character.
- [70] Redeem or Finish the Abominations (instance choice)
- In the level 70 instance “Ending the Nightmare” (Enedwaith/Dunland), there is a moral choice at the end: Quest:Redeem the Abominations vs. Quest:Finish The Abominations. You can choose to redeem the creature or finish it off. Each choice is a different quest, and only one can be completed - once you choose, the other is no longer available to you.
- [72] A Shameful Loss
- Quest:A Shameful Loss is an easily missed quest in Dunland (Isengard area). It is only offered during a specific part of the Isengard prison storyline. If you advance the story (or leave the prison area) without completing A Shameful Loss, you won’t be able to pick it up later - so grab it when you see it.
- [72] “Tracking an Old Goat” hidden quests
- In the Great River region, the quest series “Tracking an Old Goat” has some embedded mini-quests. While doing this chain, talk to all NPCs and interact with objects whenever possible - there are optional objectives that count as separate quests. If you rush through only the main objectives, you might miss these side quests. They can’t be obtained afterward, as they only appear during specific steps of the chain.
- [74] Call of Honour or Dishonoured Dead
- In the East Rohan storyline (around level 74), you will come across a decision between Quest:Call of Honour and Quest:Dishonoured Dead. These quests are two sides of the same scenario - you must pick one path. Whichever you complete, the other will not be available on that character.
- [75] Isengard 3-man instance quests
- The three Isengard 3-player instances (found in Nan Curunír) each had auto-bestowed quests associated with them. These quests are notorious for being missable - if you over-level the content or run the instances on tiered difficulty, the quests might not bestow at all. To be safe, run each Isengard 3-man instance at the intended level and check that you receive the quest before or during the run. Once you out-level them, you may never get those quests (they’ll remain forever missed).
- [79] Interrogating the Suspects (three choices)
- The quest Quest:Interrogating the Suspects (Wildermore) has three different possible sub-quests (suspects to interrogate), but you can only pursue one of them on a given character. After you choose a suspect and complete that quest, the other two options are no longer available to you.
- [79] All that Remains (two choices)
- Similarly, Quest:All that Remains in Wildermore presents two possible investigation quests, but you can only complete one path. Once you choose one approach (either of the two quests), the other is locked out.
- [80] Counselling Éaworth (two choices)
- The quest Quest:Counselling Eaworth (West Rohan) splits into two different quests (two NPCs offer advice, leading to two different outcomes). You must choose one counselor’s path to follow. Only one of the two counseling quests can be done; the other choice will disappear after you decide.
- [85] The Fisher-folk of Whitshaws
- In Wildermore (Whitshaws), there is a series of quests involving a group of fishermen refugees. These quests must be completed before the refugees depart during the epic conclusion of Wildermore. If you advance the Wildermore story past the point where the refugees leave, any remaining fishing quests in Whitshaws will no longer be available.
- [86] Edoras quests before evacuation (West Rohan)
- In West Rohan (Kingstead), make sure to finish all side quests in Edoras before you do the final story quest that evacuates Edoras. After the “Evacuation of Edoras” occurs, many NPCs relocate or vanish, and their quests (e.g. in and around Edoras/Meduseld) will become unavailable. Essentially, treat the evacuation as a point of no return for Edoras quest content.
- [91-92] Aid the Stonedeans vs. To the Stonedeans
- At the end of the West Rohan storyline, you will receive a vector quest to the Stonedeans. Depending on your quest choices, you will get either Quest:Aid the Stonedeans or Quest:To the Stonedeans. Only one of these will be given, and the other is not accessible. (They both serve a similar purpose of sending you on to the next region, just with different context.)
- [93] The First Decisions of a New Thane (three choices)
- In the East Rohan ending (after Helm’s Deep, around level 93), the quest “The First Decisions of a New Thane” presents three different decisions (each a quest) for the new thane. You can only help with one of these three options. Completing one of the three quests will mark the other two as failed (you won’t be able to do them on that character).
- [100] A Long Siege (two choices)
- In Gondor (Pelennor), the quest Quest:A Long Siege splits into two parallel quests representing different strategies. You may choose one path to complete; the alternative path will become unavailable once one is done. Both lead to the same outcome, but you’ll miss one of the two quests.
- [105] A Just Reward - Honour Alone or Spoils of War
- At the end of the Battle of Pelennor Fields, the quest Quest:A Just Reward is offered in two mutually exclusive versions: Honour Alone and Spoils of War. Each version grants a different title. When you turn in “A Just Reward,” you must choose either the honorific route or the spoils route. Whichever you pick, you cannot go back and do the other on that character (and thus will miss out on the alternate title).
- [112] Fushaum Bal repeatable quests (Mordor)
- In Mordor’s Fushaum Bal area, after you complete the quest Quest:The Fushaum Conflict you’ll have a set of repeatable quests to gain favor with the two factions. However, once you finish Quest:The Fushaum Resolution, those repeatables are replaced with one-time versions (and the originals can no longer be done). If you are aiming to complete all quests, be sure to run each of the repeatable quests at least once before wrapping up the Resolution quest.
- [115-130] Karazgar storyline reward items
- The Black Book of Mordor (and related instances) around levels 115-130 may include unique reward items (for example, from the Karazgar quest line and instances). Pay attention to the quest rewards in this range - if a quest offers a particularly unique item, consider choosing it, as you might not get another chance. (This is more of a general tip: some later Epilogue/Black Book quests have one-time rewards.)
- [120] Vales of Anduin side-quests
- In the Vales of Anduin region, there are a few side-quests involving a Beorning and an Elf that can be bypassed if you advance the main story too fast. To avoid missing these, do all quests in each hub (especially around Beorning lands) before moving on in the epic. If you rush ahead, the NPCs might leave and their quests will disappear.
- [128] Closing the Book instance choice
- During the epilogue of the Black Book of Mordor (around level 128), there is an instance Quest:Instance: Closing the Book which is only available if you choose a specific ending. The wrapper quest leading to the end of the Black Book presents a choice; if you pick the alternate ending, you do not get to run “Closing the Book.” To experience this instance, you must choose the option that leads to it (otherwise it becomes permanently missed on that character).
- [138] Gundabad Clovengap questlines
- In the Fate of Gundabad expansion, the Clovengap area has two concurrent questlines. Advancing one questline too far can cause the other line’s NPCs to move, preventing you from completing it. For example, if you finish Quest:Fangs of the Mist-walkers before doing Quest:Clovengap Mist-walkers, the latter quest becomes unavailable (the NPCs leave). To avoid this, try to progress both questlines in parallel and do not finish one chain entirely before starting the other.
