Description

Fengel (Rohirric for Prince) was the much-despised 15th King of Rohan, and the grandfather of King Théoden. He is infamous having been cursed by Wyrgende with an omen of death afflicting his entire bloodline.

Born in T.A. 2870 during the reign of his father, King Folcwine, Fengel was originally not intended to become King of Rohan, as he was the youngest of three brothers. His brothers, Folcred and Fastred, were sent off to war to aid the Kingdom of Gondor in the wars against the Haradrim far to the south, both of whom perished at the Crossings of Poros in T.A. 2885. Thus it was that when King Folcwine died in T.A. 2903, Fengel became the fifteenth King of Rohan, ruling for a total of fifty years.

Fengel was not a kind or charitable King, and was particularly noted for his greed and lust for gold, and made many enemies. His son and heir, Prince Thengel, often argued with his father, thus causing the former to leave Rohan for a time to live with his wife's family in Lossarnach, in Gondor.

Fengel's final days were marred by a winter hunting trip along the Entwash in T.A. 2953, where an old crone named Wyrgende stumbled upon the royal hunting camp, lost and hungry. Begging for a scrap of bread and goodwill, Wyrgende was rebuffed by King Fengel, who cast his own knife to her, ordered her to find her own food, and sent her away into the bitter night. Horrified, Fengel's men searched for the women when morning came, finding her body at the foot of a massive stone, with runes carved into it's face: the Curse of Wyrgende. It read:

"Feckless Fengel, fool I name thee, Grief shall be the get of thy greed. No lord of your line shall long live, upon thy seat no son shall settle. Kin and kingdom your craving hath killed, Until the might of the Mark is mended. - Wyrgende."

King Fengel was furious, and he ordered Wyrgende's body burned and the stone destroyed, but no man of his company could bear her, and every hammer and mattock they set to the stone shattered on contact. King Fengel himself assailed the stone with his sword until the blade shattered, and a shard pierced his thigh. The wound festered, and King Fengel died of blood poisoning on the first day of Spring, aged eighty-three. He was succeeded by his son Thengel, who returned from Gondor to lead the Rohirrim.

His bloodline since was marred with the deaths of many young kin. The most recent of these is Prince Théodred, who would not live to receive his father's crown.
