Aratan (Quenya for Royal Man) was born in Gondor in Second Age 3339, son of Isildur, grandson of Elendil.
Little is known about Aratan's early years. He appears in the tales about the War of the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, but he was sent to guard Minas Ithil rather than take part in the Siege of Barad-dûr.
In Third Age 2, at the Battle of the Gladden Fields, Aratan was mortally wounded when trying to rescue his brother Ciryon, who was already slain. It was at that point, with his best counsellors and two sons dead, that Isildur eventually put on the One Ring and vanished from Middle-earth.
Thus Aratan died quite young for the time, 102 years old. He had no known children.
