Skill Interactions
Whirling Retaliation is part of the Guardian's parry chain. One of the following skills must be used to make this skill available, or the Guardian must parry an incoming attack.
Sting (requires trait Relentless Assault; up to 25% application chance)
Brutal Assault (The Keen Blade)
Righteous Fury (The Keen Blade)
Reckless Attack (The Keen Blade; requires critical hit)
Force Opening (The Fighter of Shadow)
Protection by the Sword (toggle skill; requires targeted ally to parry an incoming attack)

When traited,
War-chant reduces the active cooldown of this skill by up to 5 seconds.

Thrill of Battle in the Keen Blade trait tree makes this skill apply Thrill of Battle to the Guardian, up to 5 times. If this skill lands as a critical hit, all stacks are removed. - The trait
Invigourating Response in the Keen Blade trait tree makes this skill restore up to 4% maximum Power upon a critical hit. - The trait
Tenderize in the Fighter of Shadow trait tree makes this skill grant the Guardian a stack of Tenderize, up to 5 stacks.
Tracery Interactions
- Whirling Retaliation Damage increases the damage of this skill by up to 38.5%.
- Parry Response Damage increases the damage of this skill by up to 38.5%.
- Area Effect Attack Damage increases the damage of this skill by up to 27.5%.
- Area Effect Target Count increases the number of targets of this skill by up to 4.

Tactical Information
Retaliation and Whirling Retaliation apply a parry response to the Guardian, which is required to use defensive skills like Catch a Breath and Redirect. This skill is not commonly used because of its slow animation; Retaliation is the preferred response skill.
