Bestowal Dialogue
The Cage and the Captives
"I hope they are all right."
Background
Desperate for tidings from above, captives wrestle with their helplessness in the face of the evil that threatens Umbar and Gondor.
Objective 1
Jajax rests on a cot by the entrance of the cage.
- Jajax: 'You might as well settle down. We're not going anywhere, <name>.'
Objective 2
- Pass the time in your cage
It is difficult to measure the passing of time in the cage.
Jajax says, Did you hear that? Someone is coming.
Objective 3
- Listen to the words of your visitor
It is difficult to measure the passing of time in the cage.
- Hármelak says, "I trust you two are comfortable?"
- Jajax says, "Why have you come here, Hármelak?"
- Hármelak says, "Such hostility!"
- Hármelak says, "I feared the din of celebration in the city above might keep you from sleeping."
- Hármelak says, "The people rejoiced as the Song of Waves and Wind passed the city and sailed on to Gondor."
Objective 4
Jajax rests on a cot by the entrance of the cage.
- Jajax: You tell Jajax that Hármelak is lying.
- 'Aye,' he agrees. 'She lied before, and she lies again.'
Objective 5
- Listen to the words of your captor
Your captor stands outside the cage for some purpose of her own.
- Hármelak says, "For what reason would I lie to you now? Victory is already mine."
- Hármelak says, "Gondor will burn. Umbar will triumph."
- Jajax says, "You have forgotten something, Hármelak. You may learn it again to your sorrow."
- Hármelak says, "What have I forgotten?"
- Jajax says, "Umbar is a free city."
- Hármelak says, "I know it well. I have made it so!"
- Hármelak says, "The Kindred of the Coins overthrew the Heirs of Castamir and the Church of Barkhûsh!"
- Jajax says, "The people did this."
- Jajax says, "How will they react when Nakási returns with her fleet?"
- Jajax says, "How will they welcome its crews of Heirsworn, Orcs, and Ordâkhai?"
- Hármelak says, "They will do as they are told."
- Jajax says, "Maybe. But I would not."
Objective 6
- Talk to your captor through the bars of your cage
Your captor stands outside the cage for some purpose of her own.
- Hármelak: 'It will not be as you say. The people of the city will know why I could not close the river gate. If the Song of Waves and Wind could not leave the River Ikorbân, Nakási would have turned the Narghâk cannons upon Umbar Baharbêl! Should we have sacrificed our own city for the sake of Gondor?'
- You ask Hármelak if she truly believes that Nakási or Balakhâd would have destroyed their own city, and she waves a dismissive hand.
- 'You believe the people of the city share your uncertainty, <name>.'
Objective 7
- Pass the time in your cage
It is difficult to measure the passing of time in the cage.
Hármelak says, When next I return you may believe differently. Farewell.
Jajax says, You might as well get some sleep. We may be here awhile.
- A girl watches you from outside the cage
Objective 8
Perhaps if you beckon the girl she will speak to you.
Objective 9
- Wait for the girl to speak
The girl eyes you warily.
Objective 10
The girl eyes you warily.
- Tephísa: 'I have a message for you from one of the Temámir. He says "The work continues. We need many hands to mine the Abâshal, and will forge new medallions from it. Remain alert for its shine, and stay safe
- the mine is treacherous, but there will be a light in the darkness.'
- The girl turns to go, but she hesitates. She faces you again, and you try to remember where you have before heard this voice.
- 'We watched as the ships passed the city. One galley tried to block the way to open water, and it was sunk. The terrible smoke of the cannons smelled foul. We saw Orcs on the deck of one of the ships. They cheered as the ship of Umbar burned; the water could not quench the blue flames.'
- Even through the bars you can see the pain in her eyes"
- Mysterious Girl says, "I did not always live in the shadows of Umbar-môkh."
- Mysterious Girl says, "I had a home in the city, once, and family who loved me."
- Mysterious Girl says, "But... they did not survive the flames of Barkhûsh."
- Mysterious Girl says, "I have been Tephísa ever since that day."
Objective 11
The girl eyes you warily.
- Tephísa: You never saw her face before now, but it was in Umbar-môkh that you spoke to Tephísa. She is one of the Terâsi, the forgotten children who make their way through hidden paths beneath the city. It must have been the Temámir Birûk who gave her this message to bring to you and Jajax.
- Tephísa studies your face closely.
- 'I watched the flames destroy my home once, stranger. They were orange and red then, the embers lit by servants of Barkhûsh, but a fire is a fire. Those ships will set ablaze the homes of Gondor, but they will return, and when they return the conflagration will spread to the homes of Umbar.
- 'I can help you escape, but I have a price.'
- Tephísa says, "Nothing comes for free."
- Tephísa says, "If I help you to escape, I need something from you: a promise."
- Tephísa says, "Will you swear to destroy the ships and their masters?"
Objective 12
Tephísa waits for your response.
- Tephísa: 'Swear that you will see this flees destroyed. Swear that you will end it.'
| I cannot.
|
- She stares at you through the bars.
|
| I swear it, Tephísa
|
- She stares at you through the bars.
|
| I swear it, Ashenâth
|
- She stares at you through the bars.
"How can... how can you know that name?"
|
Objective 13
- Wait to see what she will do
You have given your answer, and must now wait to see her response.
Tephísa says, So it is pledged, and I will not forget.
Objective 14
There is nothing more you can do but wait.
- Jajax: Jajax sleeps on, oblivious to everything.
