King Glóin (Northern for Glowing One) was king of the Longbeards and King of Grárik for ninety-six years. He was the son of Thorin I and heir of Durin the Deathless, being the twice great-grandson of Durin VI.[1]

Biography

Born in T.A. 2136 in Erebor during the reign of his grandfather Thráin I, Glóin would follow his father Thorin I and many of their people north to the Ered Mithrin in T.A. 2210,[1] where they would found the Grey Realm of Grárik in the shadow of the Grey Mountains. King Thorin was slain by orcs in the Ered Mithrin, and thus Glóin succeeded his father as King of Durin's Folk and King of Grárik in T.A. 2289.

Seeing vengeance for the slaying of his father, King Glóin waged the Fifth War of Dwarves and Orcs against the orcs of the Misty Mountains, a conflict which saw the Longbeards ally with the Eothéod and their successive kings Bóra, Maera, and Théodric. Their coalition succeeded in driving the orcs back to Mount Gundabad, but Glóin and Théodric opted to not enter the Mountain-hold, likely to prevent further bloodshed of their exhausted armies. Little else is recorded of the events of his reign.

Glóin died in T.A. 2385 at the age of 249, and was succeeded by his son Óin.[2]
