Thráin I (Northern for Stubborn), also known as Thráin the Old was the son of Náin I, the last king of the Longbeards in Khazad-dûm. When Náin was slain by the Balrog that had killed his father the year before, Thráin became king of the Longbeards and bearer of the dwarf-ring Handórm. Thráin evacuated the last of his people from Khazad-dûm in 1981 of the Third Age, and in 1999 T.A. he founded the kingdom of Erebor.
Thráin, 1st King under the Mountain, had dealings with the Ai-thúda, precursors of the Rohirrim. They were not all pleasant; Fram, lord of the Ai-thúda, made a gift of the teeth of Scatha to King Thráin. Thráin took it as an insult, and was furious. He believed Fram's missive to be a taunt, and would not be moved even by Wandalb's most wise words. He cast the necklace aside, proclaiming that such trinkets were poor substitutes for his people's birthright. He went as far as unfriending Wandalb for the message, sending the Wizard away in disgrace. When news of Fram's death reached Thráin, he did mourn the loss of his former friend, but relations did not improve until about 165 years later, when Fram's great-grandsom Hildáric welcomed Thráin's son Thorin I to establish a new kingdom in the Grey Mountains. Relations thereafter were more cordial, though never warm. The bond between the Ai-thúda and the Longbeards was not properly mended until the War of the Ring.
Aside from his anger at his Northmen neighbours, Thráin I ruled long and justly, passing the throne to his son, Thorin.
