King Óin (Northern for Shy) was the King of Durin's Folk and third King of Grárik for one-hundred and three years. He was the son of King Glóin, and heir of Durin the Deathless, being the thrice great-grandson of Durin VI.[1]

Biography

Óin succeeded his father King Glóin in T.A. 2385 and ruled as the King of Grárik reigning over the Longbeards for over a century [1], during which time they continued to dwell primarily in the Grey Mountains, where Oín's seat in the Grárik was located. Durin his reign, Oín made improvements on the Men Angrún, the great road that stretches from Angmar to Rhûn, and crosses over the Forest River that flows from the Grey Mountains into Eryn Lasgalen. To span the river, Óin had a sturdy dwarf-made bridge commissioned. This great work took his name, and Óinsbridge remained standing at least until the Fourth Age.

Late in Óin's reign, the power of Sauron began to stir once more. In T.A. 2460 the Shadow returned to Dol Guldur in Mirkwood with renewed strength, and by around T.A. 2480 Orcs spread through the Misty Mountains, blocking the passes into Eriador while Sauron's servants took control of Moria. Óin died in T.A. 2488 at the age of 250, and was succeeded by his son Náin II.[2]
