Lore
Mírdanant is a legendary axe forged in the Second Age by the Elves of Eregion, given in friendship to King Durin III and the dwarves of Khazad-dûm. It was said by the elves that "darkness would not fall upon Hadhodrond while the line of Durin bore Mírdanant in friendship with the Gwaith-i-Mírdain."
Thousands of years later in the Third Age, Durin V wielded this axe on his fateful expedition to reclaim the keep of Helegrod from the dragon Thorog. Both Durin and Thorog were felled in a long-lasting battle, with Mírdanant remaining embedded in the neck of the dragon for many centuries. The Longbeards long believed the prophetic words that came with the axe's gift proved false, with the death of their king.
In the present day, Helegrod has been taken by the Gaunt-lord Drugoth the Death-monger and forces out of Angmar, with even the remains of Thorog being ressurected as a wight. It is the hope of both Gonediad of Rivendell and the dwarf Glóin that Mírdanant can once more be reclaimed from the frozen halls, returned to it's rightful owners.
