Lore

Biography: Anárion
Birth - Death Second Age 3219 - 3440
Race: Man
Gender: Male
Parent(s): Elendil
Anárion
Child(ren): Three with unknown names, Meneldil
Info: Older brother: Isildur
Died during the Siege of Barad-dûr

Anárion was born in Second Age 3219 in Númenor as the second son of Elendil; his older brother was Isildur. All of Anárion's children were born in Númenor, but only the youngest's name is known, Meneldil.

In II 3319 Elendil escaped the Downfall of Númenor with his family, but a great storm separated the ships so that Isildur and Anárion landed far east. There the two jointly founded and ruled the Kingdom of Gondor out of Osgiliath. However, the two set up settlements of their own, Anárion built Minas Anor and Isildur built Minas Ithil.

In II 3429 Sauron overtook Minas Ithil but Isildur escaped with his family to Elendil, who had founded the Kingdom of Arnor. During this war Anárion managed to press back Sauron and Osgiliath was saved. To his aid came Elendil, Isildur, and a great host of what is known as the "Last Alliance of Elves and Men". The following years saw the "Battle of Dagorad" and finally the "Siege of Barad-dûr". It was there Anárion was slain in II 3440, 221 years old. Thus he died one year before his father Elendil. Later his son Meneldil succeeded him as King of Gondor.

It may be noted that Anárion never truly held the title of King of Gondor. He ruled jointly with his brother in the south while their father Elendil ruled Arnor in the north and held the title of High King of Arnor and Gondor until he was slain in the Siege of Barad-dûr. However, as the co-founder and because of his everlasting deeds he is rightfully named a joint King of Gondor. It was Anárion's descendants that ruled Gondor in the Third Age, and did so for thousands of years, but it eventually vanished more than 900 years before the current era of Lotro with Eärnur, the last king of Gondor.
