Anárion (Quenya for Son of the Sun) was the co-ruler of Gondor with his brother Isildur at the end of the Second Age, with their thrones set side by side in Osgiliath. For this reason, he is counted as a King of Gondor. All of his children were born in Númenor, though only the name of his youngest, Meneldil, is recorded.
After surviving the Downfall of Númenor in II 3319, Isildur and Anárion landed in the east and established the Kingdom of Gondor from Osgiliath. Anárion founded Minas Anor while Isildur built Minas Ithil. When Sauron captured Minas Ithil in II 3429, Isildur fled north to Arnor, while Anárion held the line in Gondor until reinforced by Elendil, Isildur, and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. Anárion fought in the War of the Last Alliance through the Battle of Dagorlad and into the siege of Barad-dûr, where he was slain in II 3440.
Although the title of High King belonged to Elendil, Anárion is remembered as a joint King of Gondor for his founding role and deeds. As he was never sole ruler, dying before his brother inherited the throne, he does not have a number in the line of kings, yet is counted as king of Gondor nevertheless. His line continued to rule Gondor throughout the Third Age until the disappearance of Eärnur, the last king. Yet the Chieftains of the Dúnedain also carried Anárion's blood through his descendant, Fíriel, and as such is still alive in Aragorn II Elessar.
