Naming Conventions

  • "Mobs" refer to enemies INSIDE an instance
  • "Creatures" refer to enemies OUTSIDE an instance
See Boilerplate:Creature for complete information.

Spelling and Punctuation

Creature article names must reflect the actual spelling and capitalization as it shows in-game, using special characters if needed.

For the names with special characters:

  • Use the Create new creature feature for an article with correct name.
  • Then create a redirect page without special characters that links to the correctly spelled article with the special characters.

Pictures

Every creature page should have a screenshot taken in game.

  • Pictures should be close-up
  • No names shown (use N to toggle these off)
  • No selection rings nor any other UI elements shown (use F12 to toggle some of these off)
See Help:Images for more instructions.

Wiki Categories

The Creature template automatically categorizes for your convenience by using pre-determined lists:

  • By Species
  • By Type
  • By Region (location)
  • By Instance

Please make sure that the following fields are filled in at the very least:

  • Genus (Ancient Evil, Creatures of Nature, Man, Orc-kind)
  • Type (Normal, Signature, Elite, Rare Signature)
  • Location (Regions: Bree-land, The Plateau of Gorgoroth, Eryn Lasgalen and the Dale-lands), unless it's an instance
  • Instance (all instances up to U22 are automatically categorized), leave location and area blank.
For a complete list see: Template:Creature at the bottom.

Creature Template

For the convenience of our editors and the sake of uniformity we have templates for people to use found here:

  1. Create new creature - This is used to create new creature pages.
  2. Boilerplate:Creature - Provides a cookie cutter layout of the creature template as well as several headings that are useful for the article.

Only Lore-masters have the ability to fill in the Species, Combat Effectiveness, Resistances and Mitigations. If you do not play a Lore-master, leave these fields empty for others to fill in.

  • If your character is a Lore-master, also fill in "inspector-lvl = " with your own level, it will display at the bottom of the template.
  • If you play a Lore-master and find a page where your LM are closer to the creature level than previous read, please update the page with new readings as the closer level the better readings.

Additional Information

Every Creature article should have a Location heading with description placed just below the Creature template. Add this, plus other headings as is appropriate:

Location
<name(s)> can be found wandering/roaming/flittering/buzzing within area in region. region
<!-- NOTICE: Coordinates only for creatures bound to a static or small location, or landmark. Otherwise without numbers. -->

Abilities
:
or
: Ability Name

Quest Involvement
* [] Quest: - Small Fellowship/etc

Deed Involvement
* Name of the deed
* Name of the deed (Advanced)

Drops
TOC (Table Of Content)

The "create new creature" and the boilerplate automatically adds a __NOTOC__ to the page. This prevents a TOC to be added to the page when four or more headings are added to the page. For older pages you may want to add __NOTOC__ as seen at the boilerplate example. Only very complex pages may have a TOC, then use toc-right where it should be inserted.

Location

While the "tooltip coords" is useful because it brings up a map, it does not make sense to add specific coordinates for creatures that are roaming large areas. Add coordinates only for creatures who occur only at a specific location (and the centre spot for named creatures patrolling a smaller location), and for the location where "rare" creatures have been seen.

For creatures which occur inside quest instances, mention the instance in the text. Two examples, depending on whether the quest should be listed or not (see below):

Names may be found inside the quest instance Name that takes place in area in region. region
Quest Involvement
* [] ...

Abilities

In most cases, this part should contain the Effects you see as a buff or debuff icon under the creature's vitals. For more complex creatures (e.g. bosses in skirmishes and instances), Skills (as far as we are able to find out about them) should be added as well.

For an example of a complicated raid boss with both buffs and skills under Abilities, see Crisiant.

Quests

Include only quests that really involve the creature. That is often "slay X of creature-type within location", or "gather Y items from creatures" and the creature drops that item-type. Do not list quests where the creature just "happens to be in your way" but is not required for the quest as such. Sometimes, in instances, a creature/mob may say some lines in the chat log, perhaps such a quest instance could be listed.

Drops

To improve clarity, fill in loot drops in any of the suggested boxes, in alphabetical order. Quest items, whether starting a quest or being a required loot drop for a quest, should be listed in the top box. Crafting and reputation items are listed in the second box together with class trophies (items reading classes having an interest in the item). More uncommon items, such as healing potions and armour and weapons go into the third box. Finally, trophies for Task quests go into the fourth box.

Same-name Issues

Same-name creatures found in different regions should have each their different page (with rare exceptions for creatures found in narrow sections that crosses region borders, e.g. the Bree-land/Lone-lands border in the Weather Hills). See Help:Names#Creatures and NPCs for details on this topic.

Same-name creatures within the same region can sometimes share the same page. But if the resulting page becomes too complex it is better to split over two or more pages and perhaps use the area as name specifier. There are several things to consider:

  • If different quests pertain to different "versions" of the those creatures, e.g. some quests to the level 40-ish mobs but some quests to the level 45-ish mobs, then that must be clearly expressed.
  • If most of the creatures in a region are one type (Normal), with a small number of a different type in a specific location, make them a separate page. An example would be Elite versions travelling with a Warband, as Dunlending_Archer_(Stonedeans_Warband).
  • If different loot drop from different "versions" of those creatures, usually with several levels in between the "versions", then that must be clearly expressed. Notice though: It is well known which levels make "hides", "crafting components", "scrolls" and much more items to drop as different "tiers", hence there is no need to be overly detailed about that at creature pages.

This is an example of shared page style:

Location
Creaturenames can be found within region.
Level 40 - 42
Creaturenames/types can be found roaming area:
* landmarkname region
Level 45 - 47
Creaturenames/types can be found roaming area. region

Quest Involvement
Level 40 - 42
* [40] Quest:
Level 45 - 47
* [45] Quest:

Drops
Level 40 - 42
--- Lootbox(es) ---
Level 45 - 47
--- Lootbox(es) ---

However, if this pattern becomes too complex or unclear, then it is better create one page per "version". This is also true when some other characteristic makes it impossible to share page.

Special Creatures

Various Levels and Types

Some world creatures have several levels or types but are the exact same in every other way. These can all be added to the same page by using a table for the various stats.

Stats
colspan=3 | <-- Creature name -->
Level
Morale / Power
Type
align="center" | <-- Level 1 -->
<-- Morale / Power -->
<-- Type, Normal, Signature, Elite etc-->
align="center" | <-- Level 2-->
<-- Morale / Power -->
<-- Type, Normal, Signature, Elite etc-->

Example: Tormented Horror

Tiered Mobs

Some instances can be played on multiple tiers, affecting the stats of creatures within them. You can reflect this on their creature article by pasting the template twice into the article and adding the following parameter just under "name = ":

tier          =

Use tier 1 for the first template and tier 2 for the second. Note that this parameter should only be used on scalable instance mobs, not on skirmish creatures.

Example: Gortheron

Skirmish Mobs

Skirmish Mobs are categorized by using |instance = Skirmish. They will then be automatically categorized.

The stats of skirmish creatures differs depending on the level, tier and group setting of a skirmish. Add the following table to the bottom of the creature page and fill it in with the stats of the creature as you encountered it in-game. Leave fields you don't have information on empty:

colspan=2 | <-- Creature name -->
colspan=4 | Morale / Power
Level
Player Grouping
width=100px | Tier I
width=100px | Tier II
width=100px | Tier III
width=100px | Type

<-- Level of the Skirmish -->
<-- Solo, Duo, Small Fellowship, Fellowship, Raid -->
<-- Morale / Power at tier I -->
<-- Morale / Power at tier II -->
<-- Morale / Power at tier III -->
<-- Type (only depends on group setting) -->

Example: Snagtalún
