Killing and defeating

Hello, fellow editors. I have started this topic for I believe that it is incorrect to use the term "killing" here in this wiki. When a player depletes the morale of a creature, the creature is considered to be "defeated", not dead. As such, maybe we could consider changing the term killing for defeating in, for example, slayer-deeds pages and such. This is, of course, open to debate and I hope to hear someone else's opinion. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Alexis RamEst (Contribs • User Talk) at 11:49, 20 February 2014‎.

  • In general your comment/desire is true of this Wiki. However, we follow language usage as we find it "in-game." And, Turbine is pretty consistent in its usages. And will fix language and spelling related issues if "/bugged."
For example, I have not looked, but I suspect that for most, if not all, "Slayer Deeds" (in Category:Slayer Deeds), the objective is "defeat xxx creatures," not "kill xxx creatures." If there are those which do not use "defeat," it is because that is how the Deed accomplishment/objective is worded in-game. (It's is easy, but tedious to check. However, feel free to check and fix if you are so inclined!)
  • Things like "Walkthroughs" for Raids and Instances, or the occasional quest, and other such narratives which utilize the verbiage of the Wiki author -- "should" use the term "defeat" rather than "kill."
That said, however, that is one thing which we do not normally spend time on -- editing content. We simply don't have the time, bodies or technology to do so. If one of "us editors" happens upon such a usage, or similarly, "non-Tolkien English" usage, we will change it, but we don't have any "Spell Checker" that we can run against the entire Wiki. It might be nice if we did. As it is many of us do have our own "spell checkers" which we can either "teach" British English (or Sindarin or Cirth, etc.)
  • All of THAT said, the one thing which IS "lacking" is a relatively complete "Manual of Style." The Wiki has evolved over time and many of the basic principles for editors to follow are poorly document, if documented at all. Hence: The Great Documentation Project.
Because of the scope of LOTRO and therefore of this Wiki, major projects such as this get worked on very randomly. Frequently triggered by questions/comments from new Editors, such as this from you. So, if you have an interest, PLEASE feel free to dig in and add to the body of knowledge.

Higher level naming complications

Although the naming conventions say to use the Region specifier when adding a new creature with a duplicate name, I've come across a snag. There are several creatures in the city of Osgiliath, which was released with Eastern Gondor, that are the same exact creature as ones over the border into Pelennor, but Pelennor is part of Old Anórien. This also means that they count for multiple deeds, depending on where you are when you kill one. After some talking with Rogue4ever on Discord, I think I'm going to proceed by using the earlier region as the one for the title, for example: Uruk-hai Warrior (Osgiliath) (or Uruk-hai Warrior (Eastern Gondor), haven't decided between the two yet). It also appears that there are some creatures that may indeed be not only in Eastern Gondor and Old Anórien, but Central Gondor as well. I have to do an inspection of the Central Gondor creatures to determine if they're identical or not.

Obviously the complication comes mostly from the fact that all these regions are level 100. Also maybe they're running out of names xD

I'd welcome any suggestions anyone has with this peculiar issue! --Rubyctook (talk) 00:34, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

I run into that problem as well, a lot, and tend to use the area name where it is first encountered, and if the creature has exactly the same stats, and is in several regions/areas, just add a category for the other area to the creature page, and include it in the area or location pages. In the creature stats just reference the various locations, and include the different deeds and quests. One example, while minor, are critters, which appear in many places. Okay, that's the exact direction I'm headed at the moment, so it sounds like there will be some consistency (between the two of us). Thanks for the input! --Ruby (talk) 17:38, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
