Bestowal Dialogue

Farewell to Evendim
"The Ranger Calenglad has long stood watch over the ancient city of Annúminas, in Evendim. If he is to join the Grey Company on its southern road, he will need to leave that city behind..."

Background

You have come with Calenglad to the Flooded Ward to clear it of robbers, that his heart may rest easy as he travels with the Grey Company.

Objective 1

Calenglad is in the Flooded Ward of Annúminas.

Calenglad: 'We have arrived, <name>. This section of the city suffered greatly in the battle against Amarthiel's forces, and robbers have come from the surrounding lands in order to plunder it of goods.
'The tree-lined streets of this ward were quite beautiful before the fighting, deserted though they were. Now the walls are cracked and many of the buildings and tombs that are found here have been flooded, or are flooding.
'Let us save what relics we may from the undeserving pockets of robbers, <name>.'

Objective 2

  • Clear the Flooded Ward of robbers with Calenglad

Calenglad is in the Flooded Ward of Annúminas.

Calenglad says, "Let us clear this ward of robbers, <name>."
Calenglad says, "The False King has been defeated, but followers of Angmar still remain in Annúminas."
Calenglad says, "The coffers of Carn Dûm are emptied, and those riches have bought the loyalty of these robbers."
Calenglad says, "Too many relics have already been wrested from this once proud city. From my city!"
Calenglad says, "There they are, <name>."
Calenglad says, "For Annúminas and Nenuial!"
Calenglad says, "The coins of Angmar are wasted if this is the quality of wretches they buy!"
Calenglad says, "Still, if the Rangers leave for the south-lands, even the weak will seem mighty if unopposed."
Calenglad says, "More robbers approach!"
Calenglad says, "They fall!"
Calenglad says, "Let us keep moving. I am not content to leave robbers within this city."
Calenglad says, "The fighting against Amarthiel's forces took a grave toll on this part of the city, <name>."
Calenglad says, "It did not always look thus."
Calenglad says, "Up these steps. The hired hands of Angmar came from this way."
Calenglad says, "They are no match. Would that all allies of Angmar were so frail!"
Calenglad says, "Annúminas has stood empty for most of the age, but the Dúnedain have always watched over it."
Calenglad says, "Can we really abandon it again? Is it wise to travel to the south-lands?"
Calenglad says, "Let us proceed, <name>."
Calenglad says, "Watch your step upon the stairs."
Calenglad says, "Do you hear that? Voices from the tomb ahead. Ready yourself for battle!"

Objective 3

  • Talk to Calenglad

Calenglad is standing in front of a tomb-entrance in the Flooded Ward.

Calenglad: 'There are more robbers inside this tomb, <name>. Clear them out and recover whatever relics they have already stolen. While you see to that, I will investigate some of these other buildings. I will meet up with you again once the tomb is clear of these villains.'
Calenglad says, "Good fortune within the crypt, <name>. There are many robbers within."

Objective 4

  • Clear the tomb of robbers while Calenglad searches the streets outside

Calenglad is standing in front of a tomb-entrance in the Flooded Ward.

You have defeated the tomb-robbers and should now examine their plunder

Objective 5

  • Investigate the tomb-robbers' plunder

The robbers have put their gathered plunder into a strongbox located within the crypt.

Inside the chest you see many relics stolen from Annúminas

Objective 6

  • Wait until Calenglad is satisfied that he can join the Grey Company

Calenglad is speaking with Gwindeth, the Blue Lady of Nenuial.

<If you completed The Blade That Was Broken>
Calenglad says, "Very good, <name>."
Calenglad says, "We will return those relics to their proper places, but first I have other business here."
Calenglad says, "Gwindeth!"
Calenglad says, "I know you are there! Gwindeth, come forth!"
Gwindeth says, "My curiosity demanded I show myself, Dúnadan. Nothing more."
Gwindeth says, "I wish to know why <name> has brought you to this place."
Calenglad says, "Why has <name> brought me? Gwindeth, it was my idea to...."
Gwindeth says, "It has been long since you came to my grotto, <name>."
Gwindeth says, "You were then the messenger of Aragorn son of Arathorn. You and he have dwelt in my thoughts ever since."
Calenglad says, "That is why we have come!"
<If you have not completed The Blade That Was Broken, the beginning lines are different.>
Gwindeth says, "My curiosity demanded I show myself, Dúnadan. Nothing more."
Gwindeth says, "Who is this <race> you bring before me, Calenglad?"
Calenglad says, "<name> is a friend of Aragorn, my chieftain, charged with mustering the Dúnedain that they may aid him."
Gwindeth says, "What dangers can have befallen the son of Arathorn that such help is necessary?"
Gwindeth says, "Has the time come at last for the king to assume his throne?"
Calenglad says, "That is why we have come!"

<For all players, dialog continues:>

Calenglad says, "It has been made known to us that Aragorn has need of the Dúnedain."
Calenglad says, "I will ride to him in Rohan. It is my duty."
Gwindeth says, "There will be trials upon the road. It is a long way to that land."
Calenglad says, "I care not, Gwindeth! All my concerns are for...those I leave behind."
Gwindeth says, "Such concerns are a weakness in Man."
Calenglad says, "Is that all you have to say to me?"
Calenglad says, "Have I not spent a lifetime...."
Gwindeth says, "Calenglad."
Gwindeth says, "Short are the lives of Men, even those of the Dúnedain."
Gwindeth says, "Even proud Elendil came in the end to death, and I mourned his passing."
Gwindeth says, "But I mourned not for a season, nor for a single span of years."
Gwindeth says, "My grief will last for many lifetimes."
Gwindeth says, "And so it is I give my love to that which can outlast the lifetime of a single Man."
Gwindeth says, "Men may die, Calenglad. Indeed, I see death upon your road."
Gwindeth says, "But if through your actions Aragorn takes his throne, a kingdom shall return that should never have ended."
Gwindeth says, "And is that not worth some measure of sorrow?"
Calenglad says, "I...I do not know, Gwindeth."
Gwindeth says, "Farewell, Calenglad and <name>. Nenuial will remember you both."
Calenglad says, "I will return when Aragorn has regained his throne! I promise!"

Objective 7

Calenglad is inside the crypt in the Flooded Ward, waiting to speak with you.

Calenglad: 'You must think me an old fool, <name>. There is no protection I can offer Gwindeth that she cannot manage for herself. Still it is difficult to leave behind people and places we hold dear.
'I did not want to leave without saying goodbye. I have done so, but it does not make the leaving any easier.
Calenglad: 'Let us leave this place, <name>. The air has grown chill of a sudden, and I am ready to return to Tinnudir.'
