Húrin of Emyn Arnen was the earliest known individual to hold the office of Steward of Gondor.
A nobleman regarded for his reliability, insight, and royal connections, he was a kinsman of King Minardil Úmanwa. Húrin was appointed to serve the crown as a (non-ruling) Steward. Unlike the earlier stewards, whose responsibilities centered mainly on managing the King's lands and properties, Húrin functioned as the monarch's principal advisor. He was also empowered to act in the King's place when the throne was vacant and to participate in selecting a successor if the King died without a direct heir.
Húrin's tenure coincided with the Great Plague, during which he worked extensively to maintain order and administration throughout Gondor.
In the generations that followed, Minardil's descendants continued to appoint their Stewards from among Húrin's line rather than drawing from the wider nobility. Over time, this tradition firmly established the Stewardship within the House of Húrin, eventually making the office hereditary.
Húrin was likely named for the tragic hero of the Edain from the First Age, Húrin Thalion. Húrin came from the southern hills of Emyn Arnen, and his high hall of Bâr Húrin, though fallen into ruin, still strikes an impressive sight crowning one of the hilltops.
