Vorondil the Hunter (Quenya for Ever-friend) was one of the Stewards of Gondor and the second of three Stewards who served under Eärnil II. He was the last Steward to not serve as a Ruling Steward.
History
With the death of his father, the office of Steward became a hereditary title within the House of Húrin, and Vorondil took up the role.
During the early years of his tenure, Gondor faced renewed assaults. In TA 2000, the Nazgûl emerged from Mordor and laid siege to Minas Ithil. The fortress fell two years later, in TA 2002, and the besiegers seized the palantír kept there.
Vorondil earned the epithet Vorondil the Hunter for pursuing the famed Kine of Araw along the shores of the Sea of Rhûn. From one of these rare white oxen he crafted the Great Horn of Gondor, decorated with silver and inscribed with runes. Passed down through the line of the Stewards, the horn was ultimately borne by Boromir, who sounded it during the fateful battle at Parth Galen where he was slain.
Vorondil was followed in office by his son Mardil, who became the first of the Ruling Stewards of Gondor. The New Archives of Minas Tirith were later renamed the Archives of Vorondil in his honor.
