Frumgar (Rohirric for First-spear) was the 3rd Chieftain of the Ai-thúda, inheriting the title at the age of 12 when both his father and grandfather were killed by orcs in the Misty Mountains.
He grew up at Avabárg in the Vales of Anduin, becoming friend to Gandalf the Grey, Barandil the Brown, Curunír the White and the Longbeards. It was Frumgar who gave Gandalf his name, calling him "Elf of the Wand", or "Wandalb", which would over time become "Gandalf". Curunír even gifted Frumgar the sword Wrothbláda.
Frumgar is best known for leading his people north into the Wells of Langflood, where he founded Fasthálla, and settling the spit of land between the Langwell and the Greylin rivers at the end of the Angmar War, in order to increase distance to the growing darkness of Dol Guldur, as well as removing himself from the threat of Orcs in the Vales after his wife was killed in an Orc raid.
When Scatha attacked Fasthálla, Frumgar valiantly defended it, but his arm was gnawed by the dragon. Frumgar's son Fram bested the longworm in combat, and it fled. Though Frumgar's life was saved, Scatha's bite carried a flesh-rotting poison, such that Fram was forced to cut off his own father's sword-arm to save his life. Even after this maiming, Frumgar remained sickly and weak for the rest of his days. Seeking revenge, Frumgar's son Fram sought out and slew the worm.
Upon his return two years later, Fram brought treasure and dragonbones from Scatha's lair. Fasthálla was rebuilt and renamed Framabárg in honour of Fram's great deed. Frumgar was gifted a necklace made of the dragon's teeth, and it pleased Frumgar to be thus avenged. However, his illness worsened after this, and a few years later he died of the unrelenting sickness. Some speculate that the necklace may have worsened Frumgar's condition.
