Dior was the son of Beren and Lúthien, and the grandson and heir of Thingol, King of Doriath. He was the first of the Half-elven.
Dior was born in East Beleriand. He married Nimloth of Doriath and settled with her by the waterfall at the base of the Blue Mountains. They had three children, among them Elwing.
After his grandfather Thingol was slain by Dwarves, Dior, accompanied by his father Beren and High Elves of Ossiriand, swiftly pursued the Dwarves to the river and fought them there. Later, Dior and his family restored the realm of Doriath. Dior appeared as the fairest of all living races.
Then the Sons of Fëanor came to Doriath. Three of the sons were slain during the attack, one of them by Dior himself, but the kingdom was destroyed. Dior and his wife Nimloth were both killed in the Second Kinslaying, along with those who sought to protect the Silmaril.
Following the assault, Elwing escaped, and the surviving elves fled to the Havens of Sirion. Elwing later married Eärendil and sought aid from Valinor.
Etymology
The name Dior means "successor" in Doriathrin, derived from Primitive Quendian ndeuro ("follower, successor").
