Nimloth was an Elf-maid of Doriath. She married Dior, heir of Thingol, in F.A. 497, and lived with him near a waterfall at the base of the Blue Mountains. There she gave birth to three children, among them Elwing.
Following the murder of King Thingol, Nimloth and Dior returned to Doriath to assume the throne. Their reign was brief, as in Yule of F.A. 506 the Sons of Fëanor attacked, killing both Nimloth and Dior. Her sons were left in the forest to die, but Elwing escaped to the Havens of Sirion.
Etymology
The name Nimloth is Sindarin, meaning "White Blossom," and shares its name with the White Tree of Númenor. An earlier name, Lindis, derives from lind ("song") + dîs ("bride"). The name Elulin combines Elu (Sindarin form of Elwë) and lind ("song").
