Description
Amondir was Lord of Tyrn Gorthad and Keeper of the Barrows during the reign of King Artandil of Cardolan. When Artandil's family and later the king himself were slain by King Malgun of Rhudaur and his host, Amondir rallied the remains of Cardolan's soldiers. He refused the crown, instead taking up rule of Cardolan as the first of its Princes. He ruled from his own keep of Dol Ernil. Amondir offered fealty to Argeleb I, king of Arthedain in Fornost, reuniting two of the three kingdoms that once made up Arnor.
Later in his rule, the Dead began to walk in the barrows of Tyrn Gorthad. Desperate to stop the Dead preying on his people, Amondir went alone into the mists that rose among the barrows, and vanished. Amondir had three sons: Amonhathol, Thannadan, and Ostecthel. Decades after Amondir's disappearance, his sons were stalked and killed by something that seemed to come from the fog. People began to call it the Grey Fear.
The Grey Fear, when it walked before the living, afterwards took the shape of Amondir.
