This article is a navigation tool to help you create a new location article. There are multiple types of locations and those types are labeled below with their corresponding Boilerplates, which give you a clean copy of the formatted guideline to copy / paste when creating a new location.

Land

Lands of Middle-earth are viewed on the first layer of the Middle-earth map.

Use Boilerplate:Lands to create a new land article.
Check out Category:Lands to see if the land article already exists!

Region

Regions of Middle-earth are viewed on the second layer of the Middle-earth map, found on the land maps.

Use Boilerplate:Regions to create a new region article.
Check out Category:Regions to see if the region article already exists!

Area

Areas of Middle-earth are viewed on the third layer of the Middle-earth map, found on the region maps.

Use Boilerplate:Areas to create a new area article.
Check out Category:Areas to see if the area article already exists!

Settlement

Settlements of Middle-earth, including but not restricted to the blue settlement icon, are viewed on either the third or fourth layer of the Middle-earth map; found on a region or area map (these are named places that may or may not have their own map).

Use Boilerplate:Location Settlements to create a new settlement article.
Check out Category:Settlements to see if the settlement article already exists!

Landmark

Landmarks of Middle-earth, including but not restricted to the flag POI icon, are viewed on the Middle-earth map that represent buildings, structures, city sections, and other noteworthy locations that are of outstanding, historical, aesthetic, or cultural importance.

Use Boilerplate:Landmarks to create a new landmark article.
Check out Category:Landmarks to see if the landmark article already exists!

Interior

Interiors of Middle-earth that require a character to step into an instance through a portal or interact with an NPC to be transported to. Examples include, but are not limited to, taverns, shops, homes, and rooms in a building and are inhabited by friendly NPCs in most cases.

Use Boilerplate:Location Interiors to create a new interior article.
Check out Category:Interiors to see if the interior article already exists!

Dungeon

Dungeons of Middle-earth that require a character to step into an instance through a portal or interact with an NPC to be transported to. These include Crafting Instances, Quest Instances, and Public Dungeons and are usually populated by enemy mobs.

Use Boilerplate:Dungeons to create a new interior article.
Check out Category:Dungeons to see if the interior article already exists!

Instance

Instances of Middle-earth that are separate from the world, sometimes duplicate copies of places, usually private and accessed through the Instance Finder, and are used for Epic Battles, Skirmishes, Raids, and World Instances.

Use Boilerplate:Instances to create a new instance article.
Check out Category:Instances to see if the instance article already exists!

Notice:

The landmark-template is used for "official landmarks". For other significant points-of-interest or locations, see pointOfInterest under Additional Information below.

Description of page Information

We try to keep landmark articles on a strict format so that regular visitors will quickly find the wanted information. Your compliance is warmly welcomed. (Scrollable)

Name
Exactly as spelled in game, see Help:Names.
Type
Optional. A description such as Tomb, Ruins, Goblin camp, Boulders, Hill, Wolf den, Pillars, etc. The text is displayed as-is and it is not added to any category or such. Omit this if the type is part the name, such as Combe North Gate.
Region
One of these 26 regions.
Area
Often read at the map for the bigger area where you are at. Some landmarks are trickier, then rather ask.
Settlement
Optional. Used for landmarks within settlements, such as within Bree.
File
The image on JPG format that is displayed topmost on the article. It is suggested that it is named exactly as the article, unless something hinders that.
pointOfInterest
Optional. Sparsely used for locations which are not official landmarks, see notes.
Map
The name of the best-scale map, often same as "region" but some areas have their own maps, e.g. Archet but often on the higher-level areas.
Coords
Values can be read from hovering over the red flag on the in-game map. However, for a stretched out landmark, such as a bridge or ruins, then use coords for the center of the area, but if it has just one "entrance" you may use values closer to the entrance. If it is a dungeon, use values for just outside the entrance (notice that some dungeons use the area template).
Location
Stick to the given pre-formatted lines. Then some facts or information that is useful in game. Lore goes to a section further down and is very much welcomed there.
Deeds and Quests
If there are deeds and/or quests, list them using the pre-formatted style. For longer lists of "starting quests" it is often possible to use transclusion from the quest-category: {{:Category:Landmarkname Quests}}. Notice that this depends on the quests and the category being updated for transclusion as well.
NPCs
If applicable. An NPC is possible to interact with, even if it ends in combat. Some are friendly scenery NPCs. The NPCs should have their "settlement" template parameter to read the name of the landmark (unless it is just one or two).
Mobs
If applicable. List creatures by name, e.g. "Snarling Wolf" but not just "Wolves", "Blue-crag Piercer" but not "Goblins".
Lore
Interesting snippets of historical or more lyric kind. Some information may be found reading quests and deeds. If quotes from external sites or books you must follow copyright rules and also add a link to the source or specify which book (but chapter and page is not asked for).
Gallery
Use only this section for other images than the header image. Use the suggested format, then images will flow themselves to fit the browser window size.
Geography type
Used if an apt category exists, see Category:Physical Geography and Category:Humanoid Geography. Erase if not applicable.
Regarding categories, remember that the landmark template adds the correct category for you, hence you rarely have to add more categories, other than "geography type".
