Bestowal Dialogue
'The darkness has spread across the mountains into formerly peaceful valleys, and these lands of [Beornings: ours] [non Beornings: mine] are no exception. Orcs and wargs spy on [Beornings: our] [non Beornings: my] people from among the trees. Goblins creep from their holes in greater numbers than ever before. Even the beasts of the wood are angered... not just by strangers, but by me, once their trusted friend and companion!
'Speak to [Beornings: your] [non Beornings: my] kin in the vales, and every one of [Beornings: our] [non Beornings: my] people will confirm I speak the truth, and that it needs addressing! [Beornings: They will be glad to speak with you, for not all of them were able to converse with you before your departure.] Once you have spoken to them, journey north to the edge of the Floodfells and find signs of the danger that creeps ever nearer to [Beornings: our] [non Beornings: my] home.'
Background
Grimbeorn, the leader of the Beornings, is worried about threats in the Vales of Anduin that are affecting his people and their way of life.
Objective 1
Gírta, Sterkist, Varthmath, and Hállkell can all be found at the Beorninghús in the Beorning-lands.
You should talk to Gírta, Sterkist, Varthmath, and Hállkell before you set out to explore the Vale.
Beorning version:
- Gírta: 'My dearest <name>, I was not able to speak with you before you departed over the mountains. I am filled with gladness that you found your way home, my <kin-daughter/kin-son>. There is much I wish to tell you for your family has stood strong against many dangers while you were away!'
- Gírta tells you of your family's many triumphs among the Vales of Anduin during the War of the Ring.
- 'My husband Grimbeorn speaks the truth. The worst of the fighting may be done, but our way of life is still under threat, even now.'
Non-Beorning version:
- Gírta: 'Look around you and tell me what you see. You see peace and you see safety! It is not easily won, and even less-easily kept! My husband, Grimbeorn, fought many battles to make it so, and he has shown no sign of stopping any day soon. Let the darkness beware!
- 'I am Gírta, matron of the Beorninghús. My husband and our kin will fight to protect this way of life from each danger that threatens. If you search for such dangers, you will find them nearby.'
All:
- Sterkist: 'Greetings again, [Beornings: <sister/brother> <name>] [non Beornings: <name>]. I waited at the Forest Gate until the Elves finally allowed me to pass through, a process that took much longer than I liked! I did not wish to anger [Beornings: Grimbeorn] [non Beornings: my sire], so I did not complain very much to the Elves about their obvious reluctance to open the way.
- 'I have not left the Beorninghús since I returned. [Beornings: Our sister] Langhár's stories about the Wold-denes have filled me with caution, and I do not plan to venture past the vineyard.'
- Varthmath: [Beornings: 'Cousin <name>! We meet again, and both of us on the other side of many adventures!] [non Beornings: 'I am called Varthmath.] I have recently come home after travelling in the Misty Mountains, where [Beornings: our] [non Beornings: my] people once lived. [non Beorning: Alas for the dwarves and the Orcs, for their wars drove us out and now it is no longer safe to return.] A pox on the cursed halls of Moria! So many evils have come out of the darkness of that place that now the mountains are lost to us. I do not know if it will ever be safe to return there.'
- [Beorning: 'My parents said it was Beorn's dream to go back to the mountains, one day. For him we will have to try, no matter how many dwarves and Orcs say otherwise.']
- Hállkell: 'I was shown kindness by the elves of Felegoth, as I would not have expected. I told Grimbeorn my story of the foes that ambushed me, and of the evil that lurks within the Elf-woods. They say they have cleansed the forest, but I hold that [Beornings: none of our people should return. The woods are still home to such darkness that even strong Beornings such as us should not take the risk.] [non Beornings: no Beorning should take the risk]. It is still "Mirkwood" to me!'
Objective 2
The entrance to the Floodfells and Ylgraf can be found at the northern edge of the Beorning-lands.
You should scout the entrance to the Floodfells and Ylgraf for Grimbeorn.
- Orcs from Gundabad have blocked the road and few keep watch over the northern edge
- This Orc head will do well as a trophy for Grimbeorn
- Wargs are numerous here
- This warg hide will do well as a trophy for Grimbeorn
Objective 3
Grimbeorn can be found at the Beorninghús in the Beorninglands.
You should talk to Grimbeorn.
- Grimbeorn: 'These trophies are certainly respectable, though they were not in life! Ha! [Beornings: I will hang them up to decorate the house, and as a reminder that our foes are always with us.]
- 'They show what I expected them to show: that although the war may be done, its soldiers remain a threat to the Vales of the Anduin. The trade route must remain closed for the safety of [Beornings: our] [non Beornings: my] people.'
