In his haste to save Faramir, Beregond has thrown open the Fen Hollen and makes for the House of the Stewards. In his wake, the enemies of Gondor descend on Rath Dínen, the Silent Street, all hoping to bring the rule of the Stewards to an end.

Background

In his haste to save Faramir, Beregond has thrown open the Fen Hollen and makes for the House of the Stewards. In his wake, the enemies of Gondor descend on Rath Dínen, the Silent Street, all hoping to bring the rule of the Stewards to an end.

Objective 1

You should search Rath Dínen for signs of Beregond.

Rath Dínen, the Silent Street, is the final resting place for the Kings and Stewards of Gondor.

Withered Tree Strong-arm says, "Aye, that's far enough."
Members of the Withered Tree block your advance!

Objective 2

  • Confront and defeat the Withered Tree

You should confront and defeat the members of the Withered Tree that have come to depose the Steward.

Withered Tree Strong-arm says, "The Steward lies within, and my fellows and I have come to have a word with him. This is no business of yours."
Withered Tree Strong-arm says, "If you were wise, you would turn about and leave, but I can see that is not your way..."
Withered Tree Strong-arm says, "Kill them."
Withered Tree Conspirator says, "We have been discovered! To arms!"
Lintanar says, "Let them pass!"
Lintanar says, "What do you know of this devilry, <class>?"
Lintanar says, "This smoke is as stone and none of us can pass! Is this the handiwork of Mithrandir or a trick of the Steward's own design?"
Lintanar says, "If you tell us how to pass through the smoke, I will allow you to leave unharmed."
Lintanar says, "I expected as much. There are always other ways to force you to speak!"
Lintanar says, "Father is a fool. To toil at the feet of a madman is no fate for our line!"
Lintanar says, "Our enemies have broken through! Get out here and fight!"
Lintanar says, "Do you want to bring the Steward to heel or not? Aid me, my brothers!"
Lintanar says, "Forget the tombs! Forget the Steward! Kill them!"
Lintanar says, "We cannot have come so far only to fail! Aid me, you fools!"
Lintanar says, "Father... forgive me..."
As the last member of the Withered Tree falls, you feel a wave of dread pass over you...
The Gloom of Nurn says, "You have already lost this battle, <name>."
The Gloom of Nurn says, "I have known it since I first looked upon you outside the gates of Dol Guldur."
The Gloom of Nurn says, "Eärnur returns, garbed in the mantle of the Dread Terror - his rule shall be endless and sworn forever to my Master's whim."
The Gloom of Nurn says, "None shall defy the returned King! Long has his crown laid amongst the Dead, but no longer!"
The Gloom of Nurn says, "None can defy his claim! Not even the Dead!"
As the Gloom of Nurn departs, spirits of fallen Gondorians appear along the Silent Street!

Objective 3

  • Defeat the risen Kings and Stewards of Gondor

You should return the risen Kings and Stewards of Gondor to rest before pursuing the Gloom of Nurn.

Boromir says, "The Morgul-blade bites deep!"
Boromir says, "You cannot hold forever..."
Boromir says, "The blade... it is still... within."
Boromir says, "Feel the fading of your life!"
Boromir says, "Glory to Gondor!"
Telemnar says, "Plague-bearers! Slay them!"
Telemnar says, "The Plague claims all!"
Telemnar says, "The Plague rots us all!"
Telemnar says, "I feel the Plague within me once more..."
Telemnar says, "Let the Plague take you!"
Tarannon Falastur says, "Berúthiel, do you torment me still?"
Tarannon Falastur says, "The Sea was to be my resting place!"
Tarannon Falastur says, "Choke and sputter!"
Tarannon Falastur says, "The Sea claims all!"
Tarannon Falastur says, "What was it all for?"
Atanatar II says, "Come to mock me like the others?"
Atanatar II says, "Suffer my fate!"
Atanatar II says, "I will not fail my people again!"
Atanatar II says, "Time erodes all."
With the risen again put to rest, the path to the House of the Kings lies open!

Objective 4

The Gloom of Nurn seeks to claim the crown of the Kings for Gothmog, who has returned to reclaim the throne of Gondor after his long absence.

The Gloom of Nurn says, "You will go no further, <name>."
The Gloom of Nurn says, "Gothmog ordered you to be spared and brought before him, but he bears no authority over me."
The Gloom of Nurn says, "I heed only my Master's call, and my hatred for you and your ilk pales in comparison to His own."
The Gloom of Nurn says, "Let this be finished at long last, and let your fate be cast asunder!"
The Gloom of Nurn says, "The Dead serve me!"
The Gloom of Nurn says, "My power is drawn from the Darkness itself!"
The Gloom of Nurn says, "None can stand before me!"
The Gloom of Nurn says, "In death, all bend to the Master's will!"
The Gloom of Nurn says, "Let the failure of the father be made complete!"
The Gloom of Nurn says, "Let the first in a line of vermin find his shame renewed!"
Eärnil II says, "Who defies the claim of my son?"
Eärnil II says, "Why does my son flee death?"
Eärnil II says, "What vile force guides my hand?"
Mardil Voronwë says, "Has the King at last returned?"
Mardil Voronwë says, "Your plans are ill-laid."
Mardil Voronwë says, "What cruel fate is this?"
Mardil Voronwë says, "Eärnur... must fall."
You have returned Eärnil and Mardil to rest and undone the Gloom's sorcery!
The Gloom of Nurn says, "Only Shadows shall remain..."
The Gloom of Nurn says, "Rise, Meneldil! Heed my Master's call!"
The Gloom of Nurn says, "The might of my Master shall smother you all!"
The Gloom of Nurn says, "Allow me to share in your strength, Master!"

The Silent Street -- Tier 2
Mithrandir says, "What is this? What has happened here?"
Mithrandir says, "<name>, how did you come to this place? No, there is not the time..."
Mithrandir says, "Come, we must rescue Faramir, and put and end to this needless bloodshed!"
Peregrin Took says, "I hope we are not too late to save Faramir, but what has become of Beregond?"
'Heed my words - slay me this traitor! Need I shame you and do it myself?'
Mithrandir says, "Stop this! All of you!"
Mithrandir says, "Stop this madness!"
Mithrandir says, "Why have you come here, my lord?"
Mithrandir says, "The House of Stewards is no place for one that yet lives!"
Mithrandir says, "Why does brother fight brother here among the tombs while the war floods the fields beyond the Gate?"
Denethor says, "When has the Lord of Gondor answered to you, Mithrandir? Do I not command my own men?"
Mithrandir says, "You do, but there are those that might dispute your will - maddened and cruel as it has become."
Mithrandir says, "And what of Faramir's fate?"
Denethor says, "Speak not of my boy, Mithrandir! He is dead! Dead!"
Peregrin Took says, "Faramir lives - he is pained and burns with a fever, but he breathes yet!"
Denethor says, "They have put a fire in his flesh, and his breath shall soon be but smoke."
Denethor says, "All shall burn, Mithrandir. The West, too, shall burn to ash!"
Denethor says, "Ashes and smoke scattered in the wind!"
Denethor says, "Do not take him from me! He calls for me, even now!"
Mithrandir says, "Your place is among your people - you must fight for them, Denethor! You know in your heart that this is the truth."
Denethor says, "My son is gone and the battle is lost. Maybe not today, nor on the morrow, but we cannot hold forever."
Denethor says, "Why should I wish to live without him? Should we not come to death as father and son?"
Mithrandir says, "That is beyond your authority, Denethor. Only the heathen kings of old slew their kin to ease the pain of their own ends."
Mithrandir says, "Let go of this madness, Denethor. There is much still that you can do for your people!"
Denethor says, "Nay! I have seen far greater than thou knowest, old grey fool! Thy hope is naught but shortsighted folly!"
Denethor says, "I knew your designs well, Mithrandir. You kept close your halfling, but in our talking, he has revealed all the names and purposes of thy companions."
Denethor says, "With one hand, you hold me forth as a shield against Mordor, and with the other, you call upon this... Ranger to usurp me!"
Denethor says, "I will not bow to one from such a fallen house, even if his claim were proven beyond all doubt!"
Mithrandir says, "What then would you do, Steward of Gondor?"
Denethor says, "I would leave the chair to my son, who would rule of his own design and take no guidance from the queer mind of a wizard!"
Mithrandir says, "Beregond would not find the breadth of his love or honour abated."
Mithrandir says, "And you would not rob Faramir of his choice while his death still remains in doubt."
Denethor says, "Thou have stolen the love of my son, and now, thou hadst stolen the love of my men..."
Denethor says, "But thou cannot defy my will: I shall rule my own end!"
Denethor says, "Come thee, hither! Come, if you are not all cowards at the wizard's bidding!"
Denethor says, "Surrender thy torch and begone!"
Mithrandir says, "Away, all of you!"
Mithrandir says, "So passes Denethor, son of Ecthelion..."
Mithrandir says, "Evil deeds have been done in Rath Dínen, but let go of the enmity that lies between you now, for it is naught but a design of the Enemy's will."
Mithrandir says, "Remember this, servants of the Lord, blind in your loyalty: were it not for the treason of Beregond, Faramir would be burned as well."
Mithrandir says, "Bear away your fallen brothers from this unhappy place and we shall bear Faramir to a place of rest and peace... or death if that be his doom."
Mithrandir says, "Let us be gone from this place, my friends."
