Walkthrough & Notes

Accepting this quest adds Elladan's Notes to your directory, you may read or waste them, at your discretion. Visit each of the Troll-filled caves in any order: Nurath [32.2S, 13.4W] Torogrod [29.5S, 20.3W] Thingroth [29.3S, 18.2W] Travel to the deepest part of each cave and use   Glorfindel's Beryl . In Nurath and Torogrod, to reach the deepest part of the cave most efficiently, always take the path that leads downward. In Thingroth, you must first travel up a ramp, and follow the lowest path thereafter. Return to Elladan Tip: Do not confuse the Shimmering Elf-Stone (it will be on-screen if you are using the quest tracker) with Glorfindel's Beryl. When you reach the deepest part of each cave, you must open inventory and click on the beryl to advance the quest. Tip: If you are doing the Troll-slayer deed for the Trollshaws you may want to not finish this quest but using the Elf-stone and slay trolls to finish the two deeds. Note: If playing solo or in a small fellowship, you can access the Inspired buff by double-clicking on the   Shimmering Elf-stone that was placed in your inventory. The  Inspired buff will last for 15 minutes. When it expires, the  Exhaustion debuff will be applied for 10 minutes. The Elf-stone cannot be used while your character is exhausted. In practical terms, this means that if you arrive at the next cave before Inspiration wears off, your health will go down to normal and you will not be able to re-apply Inspiration for 10 minutes. Therefore, if you are near the end of your Inspiration when you arrive at a cave, it's wise to stand near the cave entrance (preferably inside the cave) where you will not accidentally aggro anything until you can reuse the Shimmering Elf-stone. However, if you die, that will cancel whatever is left of your Inspiration buff, as well as any Exhaustion debuff you may have. This means that, for example, if you visit one cave and complete it with the Inspiration buff then die on your way to the next cave, you will not have to wait for the Exhaustion effect to wear off. There will be no Exhaustion effect whatsoever if you die with the Inspiration buff active. This is regardless of whether you revive yourself or retreat.

Quest Text

Bestowal dialogue 'I have given some thought to our riddle, <name>, and while I do not know if this is the answer, my heart tells me that we must exhaust this course before we can be sure it is fruitless. 'Many caves dot the wilderness of the Trollshaws, home to the creatures that give this place its name. The missing Nazgûl suffered some grievous hurt when caught between the fires of Glorfindel and the Ranger Aragorn and the waters of Bruinen, and he must have escaped to some secluded corner of the wild to regain his strength; I believe he fled to one of the troll-caves. 'I will write down the names and locations of three caves. Descend into the deepest chamber of each and hold Glorfindel's beryl aloft. We must learn if the Nazgûl hid within one of these caves in order to pick up his trail. Bring allies to these caves, for the trolls that lurk within are dangerous. Here are my notes, <name>.' Using the Shimmering Elf-stone allows you to access the inspiration buff while solo or in a smaller fellowship. Background Elladan has determined that the missing Rider may be hiding in one of the many caves that dot the crags of the Trollshaws and wants you to search several of them with Glorfindel's beryl. Objective 1 Find the deepest chamber of Torogrod Find the deepest chamber of Nurath Find the deepest chamber of Thingroth and maybe If not in a fellowship you can use the Shimmering Elf-stone to invoke inspiration Elladan gave you his notes containing the locations of the troll-caves. Elladan wants you to search three troll-caves with Glorfindel's beryl. Elladan: 'I gave you my notes on the troll-caves you should search, <name>. Descend to the deepest chamber within the caves of Torogrod, Nurath, and Thingroth and hold aloft Glorfindel's beryl.' You have reached the deepest chamber of X You hold Glorfindel's beryl aloft, but it remains dark Objective 2 Bring Glorfindel's beryl back to Elladan Elladan is at Thorenhad, his camp among the Bruinen Gorges, north of the bear-dens. Elladan is waiting to hear what Glorfindel's beryl revealed: that the missing Nazgûl was never in any of the caves you searched. Elladan: 'You have done as I asked, <name>, and for that I am grateful. Nay, do not frown so! Had you not searched the caves, we could never be sure that the Nazgûl was not hiding within, waiting for his time to strike anew. Now that we have eliminated some of his possible hiding-places, and for that we should be pleased. 'I will take Glorfindel's beryl and return it to him. For you, I have another avenue of inquiry, and it could be this one will bear fruit.'
