Indis the Fair was a Vanyarin Elf, the second wife of the first High King of the Noldor. Celebrated for her beauty, swiftness, and song, she became Queen of the Noldor and the mother of Finwë’s younger children.

History

Indis was born at Cuiviénen before the Great Journey of the Eldar. She was of the Vanyar and sister to their king.[1]

While dwelling in Aman, Indis came to love the first High King of the Noldor, though he was wed to another. After the birth of the king's son Fëanor, his first wife chose death, and the king was left in grief. Invited by the king to dwell for a time at the tallest peak of Aman and bathe himself in the cleansing light of the Two Trees, the king encountered Indis in the fields of Valinor. Their mutual love was revealed, and Manwë permitted the king to wed again.

Thus Indis became the High King of the Noldor's second wife and stepmother to Fëanor. She bore him four children, which in turn would give them High King Turgon and the Lady Galadriel as grandchildren.[2]

Indis' marriage brought strife into the High King's house. Fëanor, resentful of his stepmother, never reconciled with her or her children. This dispute deepened the division within the Noldor.[1]

In Y.T. 1490 Fëanor threatened Indis' eldest son with a sword, breaking the rules of Valinor and leading to his exile. The High King chose to accompany his eldest son, leaving Indis and her children behind.

In Y.T. 1495, Morgoth slew the High King and stole the Silmarils. In the Halls of Mandos, the deceased king met again with his first wife and offered to remain unembodied so she might live once more. He spoke of Indis' love for their children and her wish to return to the peace of the Vanyar. This request was granted, and the king did not return to life.[2]

After these events, Indis and one of her daughters dwelt again among the Vanyar, mourning her husband and estranged from the struggles of the Noldor. Her later fate is unknown.[1]

Etymology

The name Indis is glossed in Quenya as "Great, Valiant Woman", but also as "wife" or "bride".[3]
